Rigidity

not rigid, numerically checked, numerical multiprecision

Evidence: E-translation-escape-not-rigid

Scope

Square 0 of the retained witness (witness id 1) translates 0.036988 along (0, 1) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 15 of its 123 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.

Regularized drawing

Regularized by the Squares Project with its own axis tool (regularize_axis_components/2). A drawing of T-146's packing at the witness's own side: a pure regularization, which proves no new bound, so not a result. The house is itself its source's regularization of T-125's packing (Daniel after Xu, Chaoweeraprasit, Mishapolk, Levy), registered as T-146 for the upper bound its exact side proves.

s(123) — open

House adoption, 11 October 2026. Daniel’s display regularization of Xu’s packing (T-146) is now this case’s house: its exact certificate proves s(123)≤11.5913781454976982, the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about 2.14×10−10. The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as 11.5913781457115914 from Xu’s packing (T-125), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).

The SQUISH Update

Previously, nate Chaoweeraprasit, using SQUISH, reports a tighter bound s(123)≤11.6009077785163406, with exact side 3265365246780355/281474976710656. This update is confirmed at V3/C3 by the complete retained dual exact replay and separately prompted scoped AI reviews. It establishes a feasible upper bound; optimality and human oversight have not been established. The author reports the seed as Couzo’s s(102), grafted into n’s Kingbird record. The revision-specific packet retains the source print 11.6009077785163406 separately from the safe decimal ceiling. The atlas drawing below uses the update’s exact rational geometry, checked for the drawing independently of the frontier assurance. Earlier certified geometries, evidence and reviews remain retained as historical provenance, separate from this update’s confirmation.

Open. Previously, the earlier verified packing, Couzo’s at Daniel’s exact optimum (T-098), gives s(123)≤11.6013846583759755644…, and the strongest lower bound independently verified here is 11.094810 from Karakuş’s general theorem, leaving a gap of 0.5066. General bound: s(N)≥1/2+N−⌊N⌋+1/4.

The earlier exact packing

Daniel’s square-packing published on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing at its exact optimum (T-098): the same 123 squares in a square of side 11.6013846583759755644…, 9.7×10−12 below the side Couzo prints. Square for square, its pose lies within 1.5×10−3 of the binary64 pose the atlas previously pictured for this count. 45 squares move by more than 1×10−8, 14 of them squares the source lists as carrying no force and the other 31 by at most 2.3×10−6; every other square moves by at most 1.4×10−11. The previous atlas witness was that binary64 pose, posed at its finder’s larger side; the side above is witnessed by the certificate itself. Daniel’s solver moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing the side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals, each square a rational centre and a rational t=tan(θ/2).

This repository decides the certificate exactly. Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept it as well (receipts). That previously proved s(123)≤11.6013846583759755644…, the earlier verified upper bound; it says nothing about optimality. The source reports the exact point as a KKT local minimum: multipliers that keep it in equilibrium, a reduced Hessian positive definite once its exact flat motions are set aside (its per-count report), and no first-order descent across corner-to-corner contacts, each computed numerically at that point; none of that is verified here, and it bears on this packing alone, not on s(123). On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by me.”

The packing

Couzo’s square-packing reports a packing of side 11.601384658385687 for this count, dated 26 September 2026 and unchanged when this record retained the repository on 27 September 2026 (T-056). Its first packing for this count, of side 11.601386416516311, is dated 25 September 2026. The repository names no method and no tolerance, and itself states no AI assistance; its author said on issue #227 that he found the 102 and 103 packings “with the help of Claude”.

This repository certifies it exactly. The retained decimal pose rounds to an exact rational packing at centre dilation 1, of side 11.6013846583856869196…, no larger than the printed side, and every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by the promotion’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it (receipt). That proves s(123)≤11.601384658385687, which was the verified upper bound until Daniel’s exact optimum above replaced it; it says nothing about optimality. Interval arithmetic on the printed pose itself, with each angle’s true cosine and sine and no rational rounding, decides every pair and wall again and gives the same bound (interval route).

Casson’s square-packing, dated 23 September 2026 and made with the help of Claude as its README says, reports a packing of side 11.60138465962087828 for this count, larger than Couzo’s by 1.23519128×10−9. Casson’s is the earlier of the two by the timestamps this record’s priority notes keep: Couzo’s first packing for this count, of side 11.601386416516311, is dated 25 September 2026. The record states both dates and infers nothing about whether either packing derives from the other.

The previous best known packing

Before this intake the best known packing was the Kingbird catalogue’s, of side 11.60139979378801.

Found by Ellsworth in 2024, via an unrecorded method. Improved by Cantrell in January 2025. Its side length is algebraic of degree 12 over ℚ.

The lower bound

The strongest lower bound independently verified in this record is Karakuş’s general bound, which applies to every nonsquare N≥8:

s(N)≥12+N−⌊N⌋+14

Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, s(N)≥min(⌈N⌉,N−2⌊N⌋+1+1), which is stronger at this n and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.

Source-reported bounds are recorded separately from this independently verified theorem.

The reported lower-bound expression for s(123) is 522/61+22+489/61 (approximately 11.22928087555). Friedman’s DS7 survey, Theorem 9, k=11, reports this bound at n=122; reference [8] is Green’s private communication (2000). The source proof has not been recovered. The unavoidable-set argument DS7’s Figure 34 illustrates does not prove it: at k=11 that point pattern leaves a unit square empty (devtools.check_green_ds7). Inherited at n=123 by monotonicity. This is a source-reported lower bound; it does not replace the verified bound above. The exact specialization and comparison are retained by audit_ds7_lower_bounds.

The Xu construction

Xu reports (T-125) a construction at exact side 115913781457115913781457/10000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 11.5913781457115914. The pinned factual packet retains the entire source input and complete actual deciding outcomes.

The complete rational source certificate already includes the source’s stated dilation. No additional dilation or coordinate rounding is applied here.

Complete native replay, required full-roster controls and scoped independent review confirm finite feasibility at V3/C3. The source discloses LLM assistance. No global optimum, local-minimum theorem, rigidity or novelty is established. The source’s 191-touching-pair assertion for n51 is unconfirmed and is not admitted.

Evan Daniel’s certificate (T-146)

Daniel’s display regularization of Xu’s packing, reported in his regularized record lists, on no issue, at exact side 2897844536374424539887715795867/250000000000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 11.5913781454976982 (T-146). The certificate gives a rational side and, for each of the 123 unit squares, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle; the retained packet holds it with the complete native jobs that decided it.

Both maintained exact routes decided it here, sqpack’s exact separating-axis verifier and the independent rational corner checker, with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, and a third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided it again. No route here is the source’s code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The review of 11 October 2026 and the final review of 11 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(123)≤11.5913781454976982, the verified upper bound: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate regularizes for display the packing T-125 records, at the side the source reports as that packing’s exact optimum, so the packing stays with its finder and Daniel is credited with the regularization and the certificate. That the two are one packing is the source’s claim, measured here and not decided (T-146’s regularizations).

The source’s credits say the repository’s work was produced by Claude (Anthropic) under human direction.

The house it replaces, 11.5913781457115914 from Xu’s packing (T-125), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-127 at 11.6009077785130183 and T-115 at 11.6009077785163406, stay verified and are not selected. T-174 at 11.5913781454976982, 1.16×10−19 below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 14 October 2026. From 15 October 2026 until the owner’s house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold, PR #574’s houses were held for the owner, since their witnesses would add about 18.5 MB to a checkout and their custody inputs about 5.8 MB to every worker’s snapshot. The case keeps this house until T-193’s adoption, staged under think-ot5c, moves it to T-193’s side, below T-174’s, once the writer takes an algebraic side. T-193’s exact algebraic side at this count, a root of a degree-6 integer polynomial 1.16×10−19 below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 16 October 2026.
