Note
Hosono's square-packing-bounds (2 October 2026) reports s(101)≥257/25 from a measure of point, segment and rectangle orbits of total mass 10099999/100000, accepted there at every angle by its linear verifier, code/unified_linear_verify.cpp. A packing of 102 squares contains one of 101, so the bound holds here by monotonicity. Its complete replay here on 2 October 2026 matched the source's run at all 201 directions.

    Reported s(102) ≤ alpha_102 with a degree-8 exact side form

    Claim and records
    Claim
Daniel reports s(102) <= alpha_102, where alpha_102 is the feasible side of the source configuration and the selected root of the degree-8 integer polynomial in reported-catalogue.json, new_form_claims.102, with its retained rational root interval, whose ends agree to 24 places, so s(102)≤10.607174680176051125342523… The same source asserts that this polynomial is minimal; that additional algebraic assertion has not been independently established here.
    Significance
A reported exact algebraic form for an existing source configuration, without a new verified bound: a citable detail of a packing the record already credits, S2 as T-098's exact optima and T-139's more precise certificate are; a new arrangement in exact form (T-126) is S3. Confirmed on 11 October.

  • T-159 V3 C3 Calle after Xu, Levy · 2026-10-12 · n = 102

Another arrangement of Xu's design for 102 squares, certified exactly from its decimal layout

    Claim and records
    Claim
An exact rational certificate derived here from Calle's decimal layout of 102 unit squares, reported on jlevy/squares#529, proves a finite upper bound at the side the layout prints: s(102)≤10.605828696455852.

The source's file is a layout, not a certificate: each centre and each rotation in radians is printed to 18 significant digits, and a rotation printed in radians has no rational cosine and sine. The certificate is this repository's: the printed side with no dilation, every centre as printed, and each half-angle tangent rounded down at 40 places, which turns a square by less than 2e-40 radians against margins of 2e-12.

The author reports that a 60-digit decimal separating-axis check of his own, run once here from scratch and reproducing its two gaps, finds least gaps of 1.9e-12 between squares and 2.0e-12 to the walls, and that his search engine's exact rational-interval certificate accepts the layout; the engine is not public and that certificate cannot be rerun.

All three retained jobs, the positive with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, were decided again here on 12 October 2026 by both maintained exact routes and equal their retained rows. A third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided the certificate with six controls and derived it again from the layout fetched at the pin with its own reader and arithmetic, square for square. The certificate is the project's derivation and no route is the source's code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The 12 October review found no blocking defect.

The side is above the certificate the case holds, Daniel's regularization of Xu's packing (T-146), by 2.43e-11, and below Xu's own certificate (T-125), the case's ceiling until 11 October 2026 and the one the issue compares with, by 5.48e-11, the issue's figure; so it moves no case, the house at 102 is unchanged, and the entry is superseded by T-146 from the day it was registered.

Credit Calle (https://github.com/riocalle/my-repo, University of New Hampshire) with this arrangement and its layout, found by his own search engine from scratch, and Xu (T-125) with finding the design and width first, as the issue asks: Xu published on 8 October 2026 and the author's search finished its first packing of the design about ten hours later. Measured pose by pose, every square pairs with one of Xu's under a half turn of the box, 40 within 1e-9 and none turned, and 62 moved, 19 of them beyond a tenth of a unit and the largest by 0.494, 11 turned by up to about 43 degrees: another arrangement of the design, not a refinement or a regularization of Xu's packing.

The issue and README state AI assistance: the author designed and directed the project and its experiments, and Claude wrote and ran the code, the GPU search, the exact finishing step, the refinement search and both checkers.
    Significance
A certified side at n=102, 2.43e-11 above the case's ceiling (T-146) and 5.48e-11 below Xu's certificate (T-125), of another arrangement of Xu's design: a citable detail of the case that moves no bound and no theorem, S2 as T-120, T-137 and T-150 are; no lower bound or optimum.

Rigidity

not rigid, numerically checked, numerical multiprecision

Evidence: E-translation-escape-not-rigid

Scope

Square 20 of the retained witness (witness id 21) translates 0.002226 along (-0.707107, 0.707107) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 15 of its 102 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.

Regularization

Drawn as published: the layer's regularized view does not improve on the packing as published (it ties the house drawing on every goal of the improvement rule), so the house drawing is drawn (regularization policy, section 12). The view was regularized by the Squares Project with its own axis tool (regularize_axis_components/2). A drawing of T-146's packing at the witness's own side: a pure regularization, which proves no new bound, so not a result. The house is itself its source's regularization of T-125's packing (Daniel after Xu, Chaoweeraprasit, Mishapolk, Levy), registered as T-146 for the upper bound its exact side proves.

s(102) — open

House adoption, 11 October 2026. Daniel’s display regularization of Xu’s packing (T-146) is now this case’s house: its exact certificate proves s(102)≤10.6058286964315784, the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about 7.90×10−11. The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as 10.6058286965106059 from Xu’s packing (T-125), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).

External intake, 2026-10-02. Hosono’s linear-certificate source reports s(101)≥257/25=10.28 (T-073), from a measure of points, segments and rectangles accepted there at every net angle by its linear verifier, a checker the 2 October review read with no blocking defect. A packing of 102 squares contains one of 101, so the bound holds here by monotonicity, above Green’s reported 10.2467362…, which this case held by monotonicity. Its complete replay here on 2 October 2026 returned the certificate’s own record at all 201 directions, so it is also the verified lower bound here.

Previously, the best known published packing, Couzo’s at Daniel’s exact optimum (T-098), gives s(102)≤10.6071746801760511255…, and the verified lower bound is s(102)≥257/25=10.28, from Hosono’s n101 linear certificate by monotonicity, leaving a gap of 0.3272.

The earlier exact packing

Daniel’s square-packing published on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing at its exact optimum (T-098): the same 102 squares in a square of side 10.6071746801760511255…, 2.9×10−12 below the side Couzo prints. Square for square, its pose lies within 2.0×10−6 of the binary64 pose the atlas then pictured for this count. 69 squares move by more than 1×10−8, 21 of them squares the source lists as carrying no force and the other 48 by at most 1.7×10−6; every other square moves by at most 3.8×10−12. The known-best witness this record listed then was that binary64 pose, posed at its finder’s larger side; the side above is witnessed by the certificate itself. Daniel’s solver moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing the side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals, each square a rational centre and a rational t=tan(θ/2).

This repository decides the certificate exactly. Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept it as well (receipts). That previously proved s(102)≤10.6071746801760511255…, the verified upper bound at that intake; it says nothing about optimality. The source reports the exact point as a KKT local minimum: multipliers that keep it in equilibrium, a reduced Hessian positive definite once its exact flat motions are set aside (its per-count report), and no first-order descent across corner-to-corner contacts, each computed numerically at that point; none of that is verified here, and it bears on this packing alone, not on s(102). On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by me.”

The packing

Couzo’s square-packing reports a packing of side 10.607174680178947 for this count, dated 26 September 2026 and unchanged when this record retained the repository on 27 September 2026 (T-056). Its first packing for this count, of side 10.607902017731913, is dated 23 September 2026. The repository names no method and no tolerance, and itself states no AI assistance; its author said on issue #227 that he found the 102 and 103 packings “with the help of Claude”.

This repository certifies it exactly. The retained decimal pose rounds to an exact rational packing at centre dilation 1, of side 10.6071746801789459424…, no larger than the printed side, and every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by the promotion’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it (receipt). That proves s(102)≤10.607174680178947, which was the verified upper bound until Daniel’s exact optimum above replaced it; it says nothing about optimality. Interval arithmetic on the printed pose itself, with each angle’s true cosine and sine and no rational rounding, decides every pair and wall again and gives the same bound (interval route).

The previous best known packing

Before this intake the best known packing was the Kingbird catalogue’s, of side 10.61138823373863.

Found by Hajba in 2024, via an unrecorded method. Improved by Cantrell and Ellsworth in November 2024. Improved by Ellsworth in December 2024. Its side length is algebraic of degree 8 over ℚ.

The lower bound

The verified field rests on the complete replay here of Hosono’s linear certificate for 101 squares (E-n101-wand125-linear-1028-source-replay, V3/C3): all 201 directions on 2 October 2026, each returning the certificate’s own record. Its mass, 10099999/100000, is below 102, so a packing of 102 at a side below 257/25 would capture at least 102 from it.

Until 2 October 2026 the verified lower bound was Nagamochi’s general closed form, now a reported bound (see the correction below), and from then until this replay was recorded on 3 October it was Karakuş’s general bound, which applies to every nonsquare N≥8:

s(N)≥12+N−⌊N⌋+14

Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, s(N)≥min(⌈N⌉,N−2⌊N⌋+1+1), which is stronger at this n and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.

Source-reported bounds are recorded separately from this independently verified theorem.

Before 2 October the reported lower-bound expression for s(102) was 185/101+22+709/101 (approximately 10.24673626925). Friedman’s DS7 survey, Theorem 9, k=10, reports this bound at n=101; reference [8] is Green’s private communication (2000). The source proof has not been recovered. The unavoidable-set argument DS7’s Figure 34 illustrates does not prove it: at k=10 that point pattern leaves a unit square empty (review). Inherited at n=102 by monotonicity. It was a source-reported lower bound; it did not replace the verified bound above. The exact specialization and comparison are retained by audit_ds7_lower_bounds.

The Xu construction

Xu reports (T-125) a construction at exact side 21211657393021211657393/2000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 10.6058286965106059. The pinned factual packet retains the entire source input and complete actual deciding outcomes.

The complete rational source certificate already includes the source’s stated dilation. No additional dilation or coordinate rounding is applied here.

Complete native replay, required full-roster controls and scoped independent review confirm finite feasibility at V3/C3. The source discloses LLM assistance. No global optimum, local-minimum theorem, rigidity or novelty is established. The source’s 191-touching-pair assertion for n51 is unconfirmed and is not admitted.

Evan Daniel’s certificate (T-146)

Daniel’s display regularization of Xu’s packing, reported in his regularized record lists, on no issue, at exact side 10605828696431578360490734944053/1000000000000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 10.6058286964315784 (T-146). The certificate gives a rational side and, for each of the 102 unit squares, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle; the retained packet holds it with the complete native jobs that decided it.

Both maintained exact routes decided it here, sqpack’s exact separating-axis verifier and the independent rational corner checker, with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, and a third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided it again. No route here is the source’s code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The review of 11 October 2026 and the final review of 11 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(102)≤10.6058286964315784, the verified upper bound: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate regularizes for display the packing T-125 records, at the side the source reports as that packing’s exact optimum, so the packing stays with its finder and Daniel is credited with the regularization and the certificate. That the two are one packing is the source’s claim, measured here and not decided (T-146’s regularizations).

The source’s credits say the repository’s work was produced by Claude (Anthropic) under human direction.

The house it replaces, 10.6058286965106059 from Xu’s packing (T-125), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-159 at 10.605828696455852, stay verified and are not selected. T-174 at 10.6058286964315784, 1.06×10−19 below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 14 October 2026. From 15 October 2026 until the owner’s house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold, PR #574’s houses were held for the owner, since their witnesses would add about 18.5 MB to a checkout and their custody inputs about 5.8 MB to every worker’s snapshot. The case keeps this house until T-193’s adoption, staged under think-ot5c, moves it to T-193’s side, below T-174’s, once the writer takes an algebraic side. T-193’s exact algebraic side at this count, a root of a degree-4 integer polynomial 1.06×10−19 below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 16 October 2026.
