Claim and records
- Claim
- Two complete rational source certificates by Barnett, reported on jlevy/squares#505, prove finite upper bounds at the exact sides they state: and .
Each certificate gives a rational side and, for each unit square, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle, in Daniel's format; each side rounds up to the 18-place print of the issue, 12.583782203951046204 and 16.678779875343207747. The author reports that both pass four exact rational checks with zero acceptance tolerance, a separating-axis and a polygon checker of the same assisted project and Daniel's unchanged verify_cert.py and verify_cert2.py, and that Ellsworth's check_packing.py accepts 140-digit exports at tolerance 1e-90 as supplementary numerical evidence. Those statements are the author's; no source program ran here.
All six retained jobs of the two, each certificate with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, were decided again here on 11 October 2026 by both maintained exact routes and equal their retained rows, and a third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided both with six controls each and found each fact to be the packing its pinned certificate states. No route here is the source's code, and the source ran none of them, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The 11 October review found no blocking defect.
Each side was below the ceiling its case held, Xu's certificate (T-125), by 7.36e-08 at 146 and 7.35e-11 at 261, and at 146 is below Daniel's regularization (T-146) by 7.35e-08. On 11 October 2026 the case records adopted this entry as the house at both counts, each case's reported and verified upper bounds moving together, Xu's certificates kept as history and T-146 verified and not selected at 146; private-worker custody was closed in the same change (packing/devtools/house-custody-2026-10-11.json).
Credit Xu (ry-xu, https://github.com/ry-xu/square_packing, issue 432) with both packings, as the source does, and Barnett (https://github.com/RobertBarnettProjects/square-packing-research) with the refinements, by minimum-movement sequential linear programming followed by an exact rational contraction, and with the certificates. At 146 the source compares with Daniel's regularization of Xu's packing (T-146) and credits it there.
Measured pose by pose, both are Xu's arrangements: each certificate matches his square for square at the identity. The 261 is a precision refinement, no square moved by more than 9.1e-06 or turned by more than a sine of 2.4e-06. The 146 is a local re-optimization: no square moved by more than 5.0e-02, but 51 moved beyond 1e-3 and 24 turned by up to about 1.2 degrees, and it lies nearer his certificate than Daniel's view, so the refinement is of Xu's certificate.
The source discloses OpenAI Codex assistance with the solver, the certificate and checker code, the source review and the preparation. - Significance
- Smaller finite construction sides at and 261, 7.36e-08 and 7.35e-11 below the case ceilings: optimizations of packings the record already credits to Xu, the same arrangements with no square moved beyond a tenth, a citable detail of each case that moves no theorem, S2 as T-088 and T-137 are; no lower bound or optimum.

Claim and records
- Claim
- One complete rational source certificate reports a finite upper-bound improvement at the exact side it states: .
All three retained jobs, the positive with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, were decided again here on 14 October 2026 by both maintained exact routes and equal their retained rows. A third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided the certificate with six controls each and held the derived fact to the pinned file it is derived from, fetched at the pin. No route here is the source's code; the source's runs of this repository's two maintained routes on its corners witnesses are its own and decide nothing here, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The 14 October review found no blocking defect.
The author reports that its exact separating-axis checker and a separate rational polygon-intersection checker accept all 146 squares, every wall and all 10,585 pairs, with duplicate and outside controls refused and the conversion to its corners Witness/v2 lossless; and that this repository's sqpack exact_verify and check_rational_witness_independent, run unchanged, accept that witness. Those statements are the author's; no source program ran here.
Credit PingYou Ltd (https://github.com/BuddenPing/square-packing-certificates) with this further refinement, as the source asks, of Barnett's refinement (T-150, issue 505) of Xu's packing of 146 (ry-xu, issue 432); the source credits Daniel with the contact-solver source and the earlier n146 regularization. The pinned source makes no statement about AI assistance.
Measured pose by pose by that review, it is Barnett's packing (T-150) re-solved, no square moved beyond 2e-06. At 146 PR 574's certificate (T-174) is smaller, by 1.26e-79, and was held for the owner from 15 October until the house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold. Meanwhile this entry held the case, the smallest certificate there that the hold left in. The adoption of 16 October 2026 (PR #657) made Daniel's T-187, smaller than T-174, the house. - Significance
- An exact re-solve 2.12e-13 below the case ceiling, as T-146 and T-150 are; no lower bound or optimum.

Claim and records
- Claim
- One complete rational source certificate reports a finite upper-bound improvement at the exact side it states: .
All three retained jobs, the certificate with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, were decided again here on 16 October 2026 by both maintained exact routes and equal their retained rows, and the frozen comparison rebuilt equal. No route here is the source's code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The 16 October review found no blocking defect.
The author reports that his two exact rational checkers, verify_cert.py (separating axes) and verify_cert2.py (polygon intersection), accept the certificate and its regularized drawing. The side is the 80-digit KKT point S* = 12.58378219015186034216... scaled by 1 + 1e-20 about the origin corner; the source reports a local minimum strict modulo 59 exact flat motions, 69 corner-corner contacts with no corner-corner MILP descent, and 13 rattlers, and measures it against #505's packing as a different local minimum that agrees to about 1e-7 except a cluster of 10 squares tilted near 42 degrees. Those are numerical evidence, as the source says, not proofs. No source program ran here.
Credit Daniel (https://github.com/evand/square-packing), whose chain search found the packing in a time-travel test started from the public packings of 10 October, and credit Xu's packing of 146 (issue 432, T-125) as its start, as the author asks: two random large perturbations of it and a re-polish, then one exact descent step. The author names Barnett's refinement (T-150, issue 505) as the record it improves and calls the result a different local minimum from it.
Measured pose by pose by the 16 October review, the 146 pairs one to one with Xu's packing under the identity, nine squares moving beyond a tenth (at most 0.478) and 137 staying within one, and the same with Barnett's T-150 (at most 0.453): another arrangement of Xu's design and a refinement of neither, which agrees with the author's start and his different local minimum. Issue 606 states: "The search, the checks and this request were done with Claude (Claude Code). Daniel directed and reviewed the work." - Significance
- Another arrangement of Xu's design at , a new packing 1.38e-08 below the case ceiling and below every report there, as T-167 is; no lower bound or optimum.

Scope
Square 0 of the retained witness (witness id 1) translates 0.000344 along (1, 0) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 72 of its 146 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.
Regularized by the Squares Project with Daniel's regularizer (evand/square-packing, MIT), with the project's modifications: same-side exact re-solve (devtools.regularize_same_side). A drawing of T-187's packing at the witness's own side: a pure regularization, which proves no new bound, so not a result.

House adoption, 16 October 2026. Daniel’s packing from a chain search started from Xu’s n = 146 packing (T-187) is now this case’s house: its exact certificate proves , the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about . The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as from Xu’s packing, improved by Barnett and PingYou Ltd (T-168), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).
House adoption, 15 October 2026. PingYou Ltd’s exact re-solve of Barnett’s refinement of Xu’s packing (T-168) was this case’s house until 16 October 2026: its exact certificate proves , the reported and the verified upper bound, below the ceiling the case held until then, from Xu’s packing, improved by Barnett (T-150), which stays retained as history (the certificate).
House adoption, 11 October 2026. Barnett’s refinement of Xu’s packing (T-150) was this case’s house until 15 October 2026: its exact certificate proves , the reported and the verified upper bound, below the ceiling the case held until then, from Xu’s packing (T-125), which stays retained as history (the certificate).
Exact certificate, 2026-10-06. Daniel’s
square-packing published
on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing, decided here over
by two exact checkers that share no code with each other or with the
source, and by the source’s own two run here: it previously proved
, the verified upper bound (T-101). Until then the
verified upper bound was the trivial grid bound .
Previously, the packing gave , and the strongest lower bound independently verified here is from Karakuş’s general theorem, leaving a gap of . General bound: .
The exact certificate
Daniel’s
square-packing published
on 5 October 2026 exact rational certificates of the packings this register then listed
as best known, solved from its own witnesses, and offered those that do not lower a
printed side as a replay of the existing bounds, asking for nothing to be registered
from them. The certificate for this count holds the same 146 squares, each a rational
centre and a rational , in a square of side
, above the side the Kingbird catalogue prints,
. Square for square, its pose lies within of the binary64
pose the atlas then pictured for this count.
10 squares move by more than , all of them squares the source lists as carrying no
force; every other square’s centre rounds to the witness’s. Daniel’s solver moves
the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing the side
under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals.
This repository decides the certificate exactly.
Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over
twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that
shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept
it as well
(receipts).
That previously proved , the verified upper bound at that
intake: the certificate’s side rounded up at the fourteen decimals the catalogue prints,
as the record writes any certificate of a printed side.
It says nothing about optimality.
On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were
written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by
me.”
The verified upper bound and the printed side at that intake agreed to one unit of the printed side’s last place, the precision at which the record compares them. The printed side itself was not certified by that rational certificate: the certificate’s side lay above it.
The packing
Found by Cantrell in 2025, via an unrecorded method. Its side length is algebraic of degree 16 over .
The lower bound
The strongest lower bound independently verified in this record is Karakuş’s general bound, which applies to every nonsquare :
Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, , which is stronger at this and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.
Source-reported bounds are recorded separately from this independently verified theorem.
The reported lower-bound expression for is
(approximately ). Friedman’s DS7
survey, Theorem 9, k=12, reports this bound at n=145; reference [8] is Green’s private
communication (2000). The source proof has not been recovered.
The unavoidable-set argument DS7’s Figure 34 illustrates does not prove it: at k=12 that
point pattern leaves a unit square empty (devtools.check_green_ds7). Inherited at n=146
by monotonicity. This is a source-reported lower bound; it does not replace the verified
bound above. The exact specialization and comparison are retained by
audit_ds7_lower_bounds.

The Xu construction
Xu reports (T-125) a construction at exact side , displayed upward as . The pinned factual packet retains the entire source input and complete actual deciding outcomes.
The complete rational source certificate already includes the source’s stated dilation. No additional dilation or coordinate rounding is applied here.
Complete native replay, required full-roster controls and scoped independent review confirm finite feasibility at V3/C3. The source discloses LLM assistance. No global optimum, local-minimum theorem, rigidity or novelty is established. The source’s 191-touching-pair assertion for n51 is unconfirmed and is not admitted.
Robert Barnett’s certificate (T-150)
Barnett’s refinement of Xu’s packing, reported on jlevy/squares#505, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as (T-150). The certificate gives a rational side and, for each of the 146 unit squares, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle; the retained packet holds it with the complete native jobs that decided it.
Both maintained exact routes decided it here, sqpack’s exact separating-axis verifier
and the independent rational corner checker, with its duplicate-square and
outside-container controls, and a third exact route, half-extent containment and exact
intersection area, decided it again.
No route here is the source’s code, so the replay is independently re-implemented.
The
review of 11 October 2026
accepted the replay for finite feasibility.
That proves , the verified upper bound until 15 October
2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented.
It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.
The author discloses OpenAI Codex assistance with the solver, the certificate and checker code, source review and preparation.
The house it replaces, from Xu’s packing (T-125), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-146 at , stay verified and are not selected.
PingYou Ltd’s certificate (T-168)
PingYou Ltd’s exact re-solve of Barnett’s refinement of Xu’s packing, reported on jlevy/squares#566, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as (T-168).
The source ran both maintained routes itself on its corners witnesses; those runs are
its own, and the replay here is independently re-implemented.
The
review of 14 October 2026
accepted the replay for finite feasibility.
That proves , the verified upper bound until 16 October
2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented.
It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.
The certificate is PingYou Ltd’s tightening of the packing T-150 records, measured here pose by pose as that packing (T-168’s regularizations), so the packing keeps its finder’s credit and PingYou Ltd is credited with the certificate.
The pinned source makes no statement about AI assistance.
The house it replaces, from Xu’s packing, improved by Barnett (T-150), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-146 at and T-125 at , stay verified and are not selected. T-174 at , below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 14 October 2026. From 15 October 2026 until the owner’s house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold, PR #574’s houses were held for the owner, since their witnesses would add about 18.5 MB to a checkout and their custody inputs about 5.8 MB to every worker’s snapshot.
Evan Daniel’s certificate (T-187)
Daniel’s packing from a chain search started from Xu’s n = 146 packing, reported on jlevy/squares#606, at exact side , displayed upward as (T-187).
The
review of 16 October 2026
accepted the replay for finite feasibility.
That proves , the verified upper bound: confirmed,
independently re-implemented.
It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.
The issue says the search, the checks and the request were done with Claude (Claude Code), directed and reviewed by Daniel.
The author started his chain search from Xu’s packing and names Barnett’s refinement of it as the record it improves, calling the result a different local minimum. Measured here pose by pose, it pairs one to one with Xu’s packing and with Barnett’s under the identity, nine squares moving beyond a tenth: another arrangement of Xu’s design, a refinement of neither (T-187).
The house it replaces, from Xu’s packing, improved by Barnett and PingYou Ltd (T-168), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-174 at , T-150 at , T-146 at and T-125 at , stay verified and are not selected.
