    Claim and records
    Claim
Four complete rational source certificates report finite upper-bound improvements at the exact sides they state: s(156)≤12.979165853834276453965882038847, s(176)≤42253500388043689581217825957/3060154296728500000000000000, s(237)≤15.902947773658185869705573326239 and s(271)≤16.948992356451205603226618436627.

The same release states s(338)≤18.906332809852093379991386331018, s(344)≤83284325592732658265440964873/4384829811311500000000000000, s(375)≤581837142778534347520704447657618356033117642159/29235669412085804585614997608579500000000000000, s(376)≤19.904949736498672043413871274032 and s(378)≤28547984384116369335179568707/1431512228978500000000000000, beyond the case corpus; the source register tracks those as beyond-horizon rows.

All 27 retained jobs, the release's nine certificates with their duplicate-square and outside-container controls, were decided again here on 14 October 2026 by both maintained exact routes and equal their retained rows. A third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided the four certificates this entry cites with six controls each and held each retained file to its upstream bytes, fetched at the pin. No route here is the source's code; the author's runs of this repository's sqpack verifier are his and decide nothing here, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The 14 October review found no blocking defect.

The author reports that all nine requested certificates, fetched at the pin and checked against the digests and row counts the issue lists, pass this repository's sqpack verify.py and Daniel's verify_cert.py, at the revisions the issue names, in exact rational arithmetic, in 4.52 and 5.56 seconds; that 156, 237, 271, 338 and 376 are exact optima from Daniel's exact contact solver; and that 176, 344, 375 and 378 are rational witnesses of their decimal packings with centres dilated by 1 + 1e-11, 1 + 1e-12, 1 + 1e-10 and 1 + 1e-12. Those statements, and the author's replay script and receipt, are the author's; no source program ran here.

Credit Couzo (https://github.com/franciscouzo/square-packing), with the packings each started from, as the author asks: Ostashev's arrangements at 156 and 176, continued with the author's basin hopping and refinement and, at 176, through his web app; Chaoweeraprasit's SQUISH arrangements at 237 and 271, continued with the author's basin hopping and Daniel's fq refinement (237 improves the author's T-140 certificate).

Beyond the case corpus, 344 continues Fang's 344 (issue 484) from the packing reported in issue 506, and 338, 375, 376 and 378 the author's L-border constructions of issue 506 (338 and 375 from his 303, itself from SQUISH's issue 401; 376 from his earlier 304; 378 from his 306), refined with Daniel's fq at 338 and 376 and basin hopping at 378; the latest step at 375 came through the author's browser web app with Ellsworth's search. Daniel's optimizer, exact contact solver and verifier, Ellsworth's refinement and search ideas, and this project's sqpack verifier were used.

The author states that OpenAI Codex assisted the continuing search, the application work, the source audit, the verification orchestration and the request, that earlier search code and submissions were prepared with Claude Code, and that he directed the work.

Measured pose by pose by that review, the 156 continues Ostashev's packing (T-149), the 237 continues the author's T-140 design and the 271 refines Chaoweeraprasit's SQUISH packing (T-151), each paired square for square; the 176 moves Ostashev's issue-562 arrangement and pairs with no placement of it.

At 237 Polkovskyi's issue 593 (T-183) is smaller and held the case from 15 October 2026, and Couzo's T-190 has held it since 16 October 2026. At 156, 176 and 271 PR 574's certificates (T-174) are smaller, by 1.30e-19, 1.18e-02 and 1.69e-19, and were held for the owner from 15 October until the house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold. Meanwhile this entry held the cases at 156 and 271, the smallest certificates there that the hold left in, and T-165, the author's re-solve of the 176, held 176. The adoption of 16 October 2026 (PR #657) made Polkovskyi's T-186, smaller than T-174, the house at all three.
    Significance
Four continuations and refinements of earlier packings, 1.83e-06 to 5.22e-03 below their case ceilings, as T-128, T-130 and T-140 are; no lower bound or optimum.

    Claim and records
    Claim
One complete rational source certificate reports a finite upper-bound improvement at the exact side it states: s(176)≤13.807637226802279523050752140325.

All 42 retained jobs of the packet, its fourteen certificates with their duplicate-square and outside-container controls, were decided again here on 14 and 15 October 2026 by both maintained exact routes and equal their retained rows. A third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided the certificate with six controls each and held the retained file to its upstream bytes, fetched at the pin. No route here is the source's code; the author's runs of this repository's sqpack verifier are his and decide nothing here, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The 14 October review found no blocking defect.

Couzo published it in his repository on 12 October with no issue, 2.54e-10 below his issue-561 certificate (T-161); it is unchanged at the revision issue 586 pins, where the couzo-certificates-2026-10-13 packet retains it, and the certificates README there prints 13.807637226803 and calls it an exact optimum from Daniel's exact contact solver. No source says whether it is a new packing or a refinement of issue 561's; measured pose by pose by the 14 October review, it refines issue 561's packing (T-161): every square pairs with one of that packing's within 3.8e-03, none turned beyond 0.17 degrees, and the side is 2.54e-10 smaller.

Both maintained exact routes accept it here and refuse its two controls.

Credit Couzo (https://github.com/franciscouzo/square-packing); issue 561 credits Ostashev's arrangement as the start of its 176. The commit makes no statement about AI assistance; the author's issues of 12 and 13 October say OpenAI Codex assisted the search and verification and that he directed the work.

At 176 PR 574's certificate (T-174) is smaller, by 1.18e-02, and was held for the owner from 15 October until the house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold. Meanwhile this entry held the case, the smallest certificate there that the hold left in. The adoption of 16 October 2026 (PR #657) made Polkovskyi's T-186, smaller than T-174, the house.
    Significance
A refinement of issue 561's packing (T-161) at n=176, 2.54e-10 below it and 5.22e-03 below the case ceiling, as T-139 and T-137 are; no lower bound or optimum.

Rigidity

Scope

Square 3 of the retained witness (witness id 4) translates 0.000001 along (0.90097, -0.433881) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 57 of its 176 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.

Regularized drawing

Regularized by the Squares Project with its own axis tool (regularize_axis_components/2). A drawing of T-186's packing at the witness's own side: a pure regularization, which proves no new bound, so not a result. The house is itself its source's regularization of T-174's packing (Polkovskyi after Ostashev, Couzo, PingYou Ltd, Levy), registered as T-186 for the upper bound its exact side proves.

s(176) — open

Hosono’s closed form, 14 October 2026. Hosono’s closed form (wand125, 13 October 2026, T-180) states s(N)≥a(N) for every non-square N≥49, from a measure of line segments on 34 intervals of the fractional part. At n=176, k=13 and interval 6 give a(176)=13.348684012099631101477510083689…, so the reported lower bound here is now s(176)≥13.348684012099, rounded down, above Nagamochi’s closed form, 13.28820572744. The source replayed its certificate with its own checker; no record of it has been replayed here, so the verified lower bound is unchanged. The source states that its search, certificates, checkers and text were produced with AI assistance (Claude and Codex), under the direction of and reviewed by Hosono.

House adoption, 16 October 2026. Polkovskyi’s exact re-solve of Ostashev’s issue-575 n = 176 packing, after PingYou Ltd’s (T-186) is now this case’s house: its exact certificate proves s(176)≤13.7958723184364073, the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about 1.18×10−2. The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as 13.8076372268022796 from Ostashev’s packing, improved by Couzo (T-165), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).

House adoption, 15 October 2026. Couzo’s exact re-solve of his issue-561 packing, which moves Ostashev’s n = 176 arrangement (T-165) was this case’s house until 16 October 2026: its exact certificate proves s(176)≤13.8076372268022796, the reported and the verified upper bound, 5.22×10−3 below the ceiling the case held until then, 13.8128562532770564 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing (T-151), which stays retained as history (the certificate).

House adoption, 12 October 2026. Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, composed from Couzo’s n = 127 packing and the Kingbird catalogue’s n = 5 packing (T-151) was this case’s house until 15 October 2026: its exact certificate proves s(176)≤13.8128562532770564, the reported and the verified upper bound, 1.00×10−2 below the ceiling the case held until then, 13.82287565553229 from the catalogue’s packing (T-101), which stays retained as history (the certificate).

Exact certificate, 2026-10-06. Daniel’s square-packing published on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing, decided here over ℚ by two exact checkers that share no code with each other or with the source, and by the source’s own two run here: it proved s(176)≤13.82287565553230, the verified upper bound until 12 October 2026 (T-101). Until then the verified upper bound was the trivial grid bound 14.

Open. Previously, the best known packing gave s(176)≤13.82287566, and the strongest lower bound independently verified here is 13.276932 from Karakuş’s general theorem, leaving a gap of 0.5459. General bound: s(N)≥1/2+N−⌊N⌋+1/4.

The earlier verified ceiling

Until 12 October 2026 the verified upper bound here was 13.82287565553230, proved by Daniel’s exact rational certificate of this packing (E-evand-exact-ceilings-2026-10-05-exact-replay, T-101). It was larger than the catalogue’s printed side 13.82287565553229, then the best known, by 1×10−14.

It was not the value of s(176) and not a different packing: it is the certificate’s own side, 13.8228756555322952954…, rounded up at the fourteen decimals the catalogue prints. The catalogue gives the packing’s side exactly, as (25/2)+(1/2)7, and the certificate’s side lies 1.4×10−19 above that: its squares are rational and each is kept clear of its neighbours and the walls, so it bounds the exact side from above and does not reach it. That side is irrational, so no rational certificate reaches it. A mathematics blocker in the frontmatter recorded the difference until Chaoweeraprasit’s certificate (T-151) replaced both lanes.

The exact certificate

Daniel’s square-packing published on 5 October 2026 exact rational certificates of the packings this register lists as best known, solved from its own witnesses, and offered those that do not lower a printed side as a replay of the existing bounds, asking for nothing to be registered from them. The certificate for this count holds the same 176 squares, each a rational centre and a rational t=tan(θ/2), in a square of side 13.8228756555322952954…, 5.3×10−15 above the side the Kingbird catalogue prints, 13.82287565553229. Square for square, its pose lies within 2.9×10−4 of the binary64 pose the atlas pictures for this count. 5 squares move by more than 1×10−8, all of them squares the source lists as carrying no force; every other square moves by at most 1.8×10−15. Daniel’s solver moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing the side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals.

This repository decides the certificate exactly. Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept it as well (receipts). That proved s(176)≤13.82287565553230, the verified upper bound until 12 October 2026: the certificate’s side rounded up at the fourteen decimals the catalogue prints, as the record writes any certificate of a printed side. It says nothing about optimality. On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by me.”

The packing

The lower bound

The strongest lower bound independently verified in this record is Karakuş’s general bound, which applies to every nonsquare N≥8:

s(N)≥12+N−⌊N⌋+14

Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, s(N)≥min(⌈N⌉,N−2⌊N⌋+1+1), which is stronger at this n and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.

Source-reported bounds are recorded separately from this independently verified theorem.

Nate Chaoweeraprasit’s certificate (T-151)

Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, composed from Couzo’s n = 127 packing and the Kingbird catalogue’s n = 5 packing, reported on jlevy/squares#500, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as 13.8128562532770564 (T-151). The certificate gives a rational side and, for each of the 176 unit squares, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle; the retained packet holds it with the complete native jobs that decided it.

Both maintained exact routes decided it here, sqpack’s exact separating-axis verifier and the independent rational corner checker, with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, and a third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided it again. No route here is the source’s code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The review of 11 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(176)≤13.8128562532770564, the verified upper bound until 15 October 2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The source states that SQUISH’s solver, its verification and the issue were written with Claude Opus 5.5, and that the Mondrian composition method was formulated by the author and implemented with Claude Opus 5.5, under his direction.

The house it replaces, 13.82287565553229 from the catalogue’s packing (T-101), stays retained with its own replay as history.

Francisco Couzo’s certificate (T-165)

Couzo’s exact re-solve of his issue-561 packing, which moves Ostashev’s n = 176 arrangement, reported in his repository on 12 October 2026, with no issue, at exact side 552305489072091180922030085613/40000000000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 13.8076372268022796 (T-165).

One maintained route is the verifier the source ran; the independent rational corner checker and the third route are independently re-implemented. The review of 14 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(176)≤13.8076372268022796, the verified upper bound until 16 October 2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate is Couzo’s tightening of the packing T-161 records, measured here pose by pose as that packing (T-165’s regularizations), so the packing keeps its finder’s credit and Couzo is credited with the certificate.

The commit makes no statement about AI assistance; the author’s issues of 12 and 13 October say OpenAI Codex assisted the search and verification and that he directed the work.

The house it replaces, 13.8128562532770564 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing (T-151), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-161 at 13.8076372270559608, stay verified and are not selected. T-174 at 13.7958723184364073, 1.18×10−2 below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 14 October 2026. From 15 October 2026 until the owner’s house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold, PR #574’s houses were held for the owner, since their witnesses would add about 18.5 MB to a checkout and their custody inputs about 5.8 MB to every worker’s snapshot.

Mykhailo Polkovskyi’s certificate (T-186)

Polkovskyi’s exact re-solve of Ostashev’s issue-575 n = 176 packing, after PingYou Ltd’s, reported in his repository on 14 October 2026, with no issue, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as 13.7958723184364073 (T-186).

The review of 16 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(176)≤13.7958723184364073, the verified upper bound: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate is Polkovskyi’s tightening of the packing T-174 records, measured here pose by pose as that packing (T-186’s regularizations), so the packing keeps its finder’s credit and Polkovskyi is credited with the certificate.

The commit makes no statement about AI assistance; the author’s issue 593 discloses Gemini assistance with solver scripting, precision checks and formatting.

The house it replaces, 13.8076372268022796 from Ostashev’s packing, improved by Couzo (T-165), stays retained with its own replay as history.
