    Claim and records
    Claim
One complete rational source certificate reports a finite upper-bound improvement at the exact side it states: s(236)≤15.861934390607358617243798571394.

The certificate and its duplicate-square and outside-container controls were decided here on 19 October 2026 by both maintained exact routes, and the frozen comparison rebuilt; no route here is the source's code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The 19 October review found no blocking defect.

Issue 659 reports a packing found by Daniel's basin explorer from a rebuild of Chaoweeraprasit's (itsnaka's) SQUISH Mondrian composition of #481 (T-136), built from Kingbird's s(152)_r2 corner piece and itsnaka's s(88) (#422), and asks that the composition be credited for the construction; it calls the result a different local minimum from #481's, with no tilt angle shared. The author reports that his two exact checkers accept the certificate and its 6-group regularized view at the same side, and a KKT local minimum strict modulo 92 exact flat motions; those are numerical evidence, not proofs. The issue says the work was done with Claude (Claude Code) under Daniel's direction.
    Significance
Another arrangement of #481's design 2.02e-03 below the case, as T-160 at 154 and T-183 at 237 are; no lower bound or optimum.

Rigidity

not rigid, numerically checked, numerical multiprecision

Evidence: E-translation-escape-not-rigid

Scope

Square 1 of the retained witness (witness id 2) translates 0.00071 along (0.790819, 0.61205) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 110 of its 236 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.

Regularized drawing

Regularized by the Squares Project with Daniel's regularizer (evand/square-packing, MIT), with the project's modifications: same-side exact re-solve (devtools.regularize_same_side). A drawing of T-218's packing at the witness's own side: a pure regularization, which proves no new bound, so not a result.

s(236) — open

Hosono’s closed form, 14 October 2026. Hosono’s closed form (wand125, 13 October 2026, T-180) states s(N)≥a(N) for every non-square N≥49, from a measure of line segments on 34 intervals of the fractional part. At n=236, k=15 and interval 11 give a(236)=15.424737428424020507954737963467…, so the reported lower bound here is now s(236)≥15.424737428424, rounded down, above Nagamochi’s closed form, 15.38749456993. The source replayed its certificate with its own checker; no record of it has been replayed here, so the verified lower bound is unchanged. The source states that its search, certificates, checkers and text were produced with AI assistance (Claude and Codex), under the direction of and reviewed by Hosono.

House adoption, 19 October 2026. Daniel’s packing from a rebuild of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH composition (T-218) is now this case’s house: its exact certificate proves s(236)≤15.8619343906073587, the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about 2.02×10−3. The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as 15.8639557471592675 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by Daniel (T-146), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).

House adoption, 11 October 2026. Daniel’s display regularization of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing (T-146) was this case’s house until 19 October 2026: its exact certificate proves s(236)≤15.8639557471592675, the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about 3.85×10−3. The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as 15.8678008394199166 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by Gupta (T-127), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).

The second SQUISH update

Previously, Chaoweeraprasit, using SQUISH, reports this packing: s(236)≤15.8678008394255397, with exact side 8932777743453263/562949953421312. Two independently implemented exact rational SAT routes accepted the complete packing and rejected both complete-roster controls. Two separately prompted AI reviews accepted the mathematical inputs and full receipt bindings. The author reports the seed as SQUISH’s own s(88), grafted into n236’s record.

The revision-specific packet retains the source print 15.8678008394255396 separately from the verified upward decimal ceiling. The exact side is unchanged; this certifies feasibility and an upper bound, without optimality, rigidity or human oversight claims. Earlier source geometry, certificates, credit and verification lanes remain historical evidence for their own packings.

Open. Previously, the best known published packing, Couzo’s at Daniel’s exact optimum (T-098), gives s(236)≤15.8722190256072828784…, and the strongest lower bound independently verified here is 15.374474 from Karakuş’s general theorem, leaving a gap of 0.4977. General bound: s(N) >= 1/2 + sqrt(N - floor(sqrt(N)) + 1/4).

The exact optimum

Daniel’s square-packing published on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing at its exact optimum (T-098): the same 236 squares in a square of side 15.8722190256072828784…, 8.8×10−12 below the side Couzo prints. Square for square, its pose lies within 9.5×10−6 of the binary64 pose the atlas pictured at that intake for this count. 148 squares move by more than 1×10−8, 34 of them squares the source lists as carrying no force and the other 114 by at most 2.7×10−6; every other square moves by at most 2.7×10−9. The known-best witness this record lists is that binary64 pose, posed at its finder’s larger side; the side above is witnessed by the certificate itself. Daniel’s solver moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing the side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals, each square a rational centre and a rational t=tan(θ/2).

This repository decides the certificate exactly. Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept it as well (receipts). That previously proved s(236)≤15.8722190256072828784…, the verified upper bound; it says nothing about optimality. The source reports the exact point as a KKT local minimum: multipliers that keep it in equilibrium, a reduced Hessian positive definite once its exact flat motions are set aside (its per-count report), and no first-order descent across corner-to-corner contacts, each computed numerically at that point; none of that is verified here, and it bears on this packing alone, not on s(236). On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by me.”

The packing

Couzo’s square-packing reports a packing of side 15.872219025616040 for this count, dated 26 September 2026 and unchanged when this record retained the repository on 27 September 2026 (T-056). Its first packing for this count, of side 15.872415529525043, is dated 24 September 2026. The repository names no method and no tolerance, and itself states no AI assistance; its author said on issue #227 that he found the 102 and 103 packings “with the help of Claude”.

This repository certifies it exactly. The retained decimal pose rounds to an exact rational packing at centre dilation 1, of side 15.8722190256160403242…, 3.242×10−16 above the printed side, and every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by the promotion’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it (receipt). That proves s(236)≤15.872219025616041, which was the verified upper bound until Daniel’s exact optimum above replaced it; it says nothing about optimality. Interval arithmetic on the printed pose itself, with each angle’s true cosine and sine and no rational rounding, decides every pair and wall again and gives the same bound (interval route).

Casson’s square-packing, dated 23 September 2026 and made with the help of Claude as its README says, reports a packing of side 15.87606262597991957 for this count, larger than Couzo’s by 0.00384360036387957. Casson’s is the earlier of the two by the timestamps this record’s priority notes keep: Couzo’s first packing for this count, of side 15.872415529525043, is dated 24 September 2026. The record states both dates and infers nothing about whether either packing derives from the other.

The previous best known packing

Before this intake the best known packing was the Kingbird catalogue’s, of side 15.87607676541001.

Found by Ellsworth in 2024, via an unrecorded method. Improved by Ellsworth in December 2024. Its side length is algebraic of degree 12 over ℚ.

The lower bound

The strongest lower bound independently verified in this record is Karakuş’s general bound, which applies to every nonsquare N≥8:

s(N)≥12+N−⌊N⌋+14

Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, s(N)≥min(⌈N⌉,N−2⌊N⌋+1+1), which is stronger at this n and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.

Source-reported bounds are recorded separately from this independently verified theorem.

The Gupta precision refinement

Gupta refines the earlier SQUISH construction at exact rational side 7933900419709958298108912097443/500000000000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 15.8678008394199166 (T-127). The complete factual packet retains every original certificate, complete comparator and actual deciding outcome for all seventeen source cases, including three withdrawals.

Complete dual-route native replay, full-roster controls and separately prompted source and production review confirm finite feasibility at V3/C3 using independently re-implemented deciding code. The repository routes share parsing, half-angle conversion, Fraction arithmetic and SAT methodology; the recorded code relation is to the source producer’s verification, not to each other. The full source poses are converted without dilation or rounding. The source credits Chaoweeraprasit for SQUISH and Daniel for the optimizer. No author program is executed here. Feasibility establishes no optimizer, local-minimum, rigidity, novelty, priority, global-optimality, formal proof or human-oversight assurance.

Evan Daniel’s certificate (T-146)

Daniel’s display regularization of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, reported in his regularized record lists, on no issue, at exact side 3172791149431853484523540541259/200000000000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 15.8639557471592675 (T-146). The certificate gives a rational side and, for each of the 236 unit squares, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle; the retained packet holds it with the complete native jobs that decided it.

Both maintained exact routes decided it here, sqpack’s exact separating-axis verifier and the independent rational corner checker, with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, and a third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided it again. No route here is the source’s code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The review of 11 October 2026 and the final review of 11 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(236)≤15.8639557471592675, the verified upper bound until 19 October 2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate regularizes for display the packing T-136 records, at the side the source reports as that packing’s exact optimum, so the packing stays with its finder and Daniel is credited with the regularization and the certificate. That the two are one packing is the source’s claim, measured here and not decided (T-146’s regularizations).

The source’s credits say the repository’s work was produced by Claude (Anthropic) under human direction.

The house it replaces, 15.8678008394199166 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by Gupta (T-127), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-136 at 15.8639557471592678, T-116 at 15.8678008394255397 and T-125 at 15.8700138505158701, stay verified and are not selected. T-174 at 15.8639557471592675, 1.59×10−19 below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 14 October 2026. From 15 October 2026 until the owner’s house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold, PR #574’s houses were held for the owner, since their witnesses would add about 18.5 MB to a checkout and their custody inputs about 5.8 MB to every worker’s snapshot.

Evan Daniel’s certificate (T-218)

Daniel’s packing from a rebuild of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH composition, reported on jlevy/squares#659, at exact side 7930967195303679308621899285697/500000000000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 15.8619343906073587 (T-218).

The review of 19 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(236)≤15.8619343906073587, the verified upper bound: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The issue says the work was done with Claude (Claude Code), directed and approved by Daniel.

The author’s basin explorer descended to this packing from a rebuild of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH composition of #481, made from Kingbird’s s(152)_r2 corner piece and itsnaka’s s(88); the issue credits that composition for the construction. Measured here, the best assignment against the view of #481’s packing the case held moves ten squares beyond a tenth and keeps 226 within one: another arrangement of #481’s design (T-218).

The house it replaces, 15.8639557471592675 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by Daniel (T-146), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-174 at 15.8639557471592675, T-136 at 15.8639557471592678, T-127 at 15.8678008394199166, T-116 at 15.8678008394255397 and T-125 at 15.8700138505158701, stay verified and are not selected.
