Claim and records
- Claim
- = 7.4, by Hosono's mixed rectangle-density certificate of 28 September 2026. It exceeds Green's reported 2 sqrt(2) + 101/25 + 3 sqrt(14)/25 = 7.3174260 by more than 0.0825739888. The certificate's mass is below 51 too, so it gives as well.
The certificate is a D4-expanded rectangle density of 553 orbit representatives, total mass 4999999/100000 < 50, core side 9977/10000 and 201 net half-angles of step 83/40000. It is accepted at every oblique net angle by code/mixed_rotated_verify.cpp, a research copy of Tokoharu's verify.cpp that accepts coverage at least 1 instead of 10001/10000 and checks each net node's unit-square centre domain, and at angle zero by exact integer tables.
The source's complete replay was run here on 29 September 2026 on the pinned bundle, with the source's driver and checker unchanged: all 201 directions, each equal to the shipped record. This repository's exact audit checked the premises and the integrity of all 621 bundle files and all 200 oblique inputs. The replay runs the source's own algorithm and is not an independent decision of coverage.
Hosono after Daniel and Tokoharu, square-packing-bounds, the measure resting on Tokoharu's format and checker. The source says parts of the work were produced with AI assistance under human direction. - Significance
- Raised the verified lower bound at by 0.317 over Nagamochi's closed form, and at by 0.236, and stands 0.0826 above Green's reported value at . The two changes to Tokoharu's checker were read and found legitimate on 2026-09-28. A substantive case result at S3. The closed form has been a reported bound since Karakuş's finding (T-085, merged 2026-10-03), so the margins over the verified floor it left, Karakuş's general bound, are larger. Confirmed on 11 October: the mixed certificate, point masses beside rectangle densities, is a kind within Tokoharu's framework, as T-073's linear measure is, and an extension at one count is S3 with the kind noted, as T-073 is; T-047, the framework, holds the S4.

Scope
Square 5 of the retained witness (witness id 6) translates 0.121218 along (0.707107, -0.707107) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 10 of its 50 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.
Regularized by the Squares Project with Daniel's regularizer (evand/square-packing, MIT), with the project's modifications: same-side exact re-solve (devtools.regularize_same_side). A drawing of T-155's packing at the witness's own side. Its exact side is registered as T-155, the upper bound it proves; the drawing itself is no further result.
- Blocker (mathematics): verified_upper_bound is E-regularized-bounds-2026-10-12-exact-decision's exact side, 7.57142857142857142857142857142857143, printed as 7.57142857142858, which trails the report 7.57142857142857 by 1e-14, and the report's exact form 7 + (4/7), a rational side, which this certificate does not reach: the certificate's side lies 1.4e-36 above it. Closing the gap needs an exact certificate of the packing at that side.
E-kingbird-upper-register - Blocker (source evidence): Green's reported lower-bound proof, cited as private communication by Friedman, has not been recovered or independently replayed.

Exact regularized certificate, 2026-10-12. This project’s regularization pass, Daniel’s exact solver and regularizer run here on this register’s witness, produced an exact rational packing of this arrangement, decided here over by two exact checkers: it proves , the verified upper bound (T-155), which the record still prints as . Until then the verified upper bound was exactly , the side of Daniel’s exact certificate of this packing rounded up at the printed precision (T-101).
Exact certificate, 2026-10-06. Daniel’s
square-packing published
on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing, decided here over
by two exact checkers that share no code with each other or with the
source, and by the source’s own two run here: it proves ,
the verified upper bound from 6 to 12 October 2026 (T-101). Until then the verified
upper bound was the trivial grid bound .
External intake, 2026-09-28. Hosono’s
point-and-mixed source
reports , from a D4-expanded density of 553 rectangle orbits with
total mass , core side and a 201-node angle net,
accepted there by a research copy of Tokoharu’s interval checker that accepts coverage
at least 1 instead of and checks each net node’s unit-square centre
domain. It exceeds Green’s reported bound by more than , and the
review of
28 September found both changes to Tokoharu’s checker legitimate and no blocking
finding. This repository’s exact audit checks the premises, and the complete coverage
replay here on 29 September returned the shipped record at all 201 directions, so it is
also the verified lower bound.
Hosono’s README says parts of the work were produced with AI assistance under human
direction.
Open. The best known packing gives , and the verified lower bound is , from Hosono’s mixed rectangle-density certificate, leaving a gap of .
The verified upper bound is a ceiling
verified_upper_bound for this case is ,
exactly, proved by the exact regularized certificate of this packing
(E-regularized-bounds-2026-10-12-exact-decision, T-155), and the record prints it as
. As printed it is larger than the best known
two fields above it, by .
It is not the value of and not a different packing: it is the certificate’s own
exact side. The catalogue gives the packing’s side exactly, as , and the
certificate’s side lies above that, so it bounds the exact side from above and
does not reach it. That side is rational, so an exact certificate of the packing at that
side would reach it.
The mathematics blocker in the frontmatter records the difference.

The regularized exact certificate
This project’s regularization pass of 11 and 12 October 2026 ran Daniel’s exact
solver and regularizer
(evand/square-packing, MIT, vendored here)
on this register’s witness for this count, with the conservative angle policy and
coincide placement, and this project’s same-side re-solve then fixed the result’s
tight contacts over at the witness’s own side.
The result is an exact rational packing of the same 50 squares in a square of side
, below the verified upper bound the
record held before, and below the side of Daniel’s certificate of this
packing (T-101): it is the witness’s own side.
Measured against the witness under the box’s eight symmetries, its squares pair one to
one with the witness’s; 6 move by more than , the largest by , and none
turns by more than as a sine.
It redraws the packing visibly, and is drawn only once the regularized layer admits it
under the regularization policy.
Each pair and each wall is decided over twice, by sqpack’s exact
separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it, and both
accept it; both refuse it with its tightest pair pushed into overlap and with its box
shrunk past its least clearance (certificate).
The same two checkers accepted it in the run that made it, so this is a reproduction
with the producer’s code.
That proves , the verified upper bound
(T-155), the exact form of the case’s verified_upper_bound, which prints it as
, the decimal it printed before and an upper display of it.
It says nothing about optimality, and the packing stays its finders’.
The earlier exact certificate
Daniel’s
square-packing published
on 5 October 2026 exact rational certificates of the packings this register lists as
best known, solved from its own witnesses, and offered those that do not lower a printed
side as a replay of the existing bounds, asking for nothing to be registered from them.
The certificate for this count holds the same 50 squares, each a rational centre and a
rational , in a square of side ,
above the side the Kingbird catalogue prints, . Square for
square, its pose lies within of the binary64 pose the atlas pictures for this
count. 6 squares move by more than , all of them squares the source lists as
carrying no force; every other square’s centre rounds to the witness’s. Daniel’s
solver moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing
the side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals.
This repository decides the certificate exactly.
Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over
twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that
shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept
it as well
(receipts).
That proves , the verified upper bound until 12 October
2026: the certificate’s side rounded up at the fourteen decimals the catalogue prints,
as the record writes any certificate of a printed side.
It says nothing about optimality.
On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were
written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by
me.”
The packing
Found by Schadt in 2025, via simulated annealing.
The lower bound
The certificate is a
D4-expanded density of 553 rectangle orbits with no point mass, of total mass
, at core side on 201 net half-angles of step
, such that the shrunken core of every rotated unit square at each net
direction captures mass at least . The source’s research copy of Tokoharu’s interval
checker, which accepts coverage at least and checks each net node’s unit-square
centre domain, decides the oblique directions, and exact integer tables the axis
direction.
The verified field rests on a complete replay here
(E-n050-wand125-mixed-740-source-replay, V3/C3): the source’s
driver and checker, unchanged, on the pinned bundle, all 201 directions on 29 September,
each equal to the shipped record.
It runs the source’s own algorithm, so it confirms the source’s run rather than deciding
coverage a second way.
The checker refuses two mutated copies of the source’s certificate of the same
kind, and the
review of
28 September found both changes to Tokoharu’s checker legitimate.
The certificate’s mass is below 51 too, so it gives as well.
Earlier lower bounds
Until 2 October 2026 the verified lower bound was Nagamochi’s general closed form, now a reported bound (see the correction below). Karakuş’s general bound, independently verified here and below this certificate at this , applies to every nonsquare :
Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, , which is stronger at this and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.
See the Frontier corpus summary for the current aggregate count; source-reported bounds are recorded separately.
Before the 2026-09-28 intake the reported lower bound was the expression
(approximately ). Friedman’s DS7
survey, Theorem 9, k=7, reports this bound at n=50; reference [8] is Green’s private
communication (2000). The source proof has not been recovered, and the report stays as
evidence. The unavoidable-set argument DS7’s Figure 34 illustrates does not prove it: at
that point pattern leaves a unit square empty
(review). The
exact specialization and comparison are retained by
audit_ds7_lower_bounds.
