Rigidity

not rigid, numerically checked, numerical multiprecision

Evidence: E-translation-escape-not-rigid

Scope

Square 0 of the retained witness (witness id 1) translates 0.017917 along (0.707107, -0.707107) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 33 of its 263 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.

Regularization

Drawn as published: the layer's regularized view does not improve on the packing as published (it ties the house drawing on every goal of the improvement rule), so the house drawing is drawn (regularization policy, section 12). The view was regularized by the Squares Project with its own axis tool (regularize_axis_components/2). A drawing of T-174's packing at the witness's own side: a pure regularization, which proves no new bound, so not a result. The house is itself its source's regularization of T-146's packing (PingYou Ltd after Friedman, Ellsworth, Daniel, Xu, Barnett, Couzo, Ostashev, Chaoweeraprasit, Gupta, Fang, Polkovskyi, Levy), registered as T-174 for the upper bound its exact side proves.

s(263) — open

Hosono’s closed form, 14 October 2026. Hosono’s closed form (wand125, 13 October 2026, T-180) states s(N)≥a(N) for every non-square N≥49, from a measure of line segments on 34 intervals of the fractional part. At n=263, k=16 and interval 6 give a(263)=16.271413902714271056981219029807…, so the reported lower bound here is now s(263)≥16.271413902714, rounded down, above Nagamochi’s closed form, 16.23154621172. The source replayed its certificate with its own checker; no record of it has been replayed here, so the verified lower bound is unchanged. The source states that its search, certificates, checkers and text were produced with AI assistance (Claude and Codex), under the direction of and reviewed by Hosono.

House adoption, 17 October 2026. PingYou Ltd’s tighter certificate of Daniel’s display regularization of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing (T-174) is now this case’s house: its exact certificate proves s(263)≤16.73316600789937898, the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about 1.67×10−19. The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as 16.7331660078993790 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by Daniel (T-146), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).

House adoption, 11 October 2026. Daniel’s display regularization of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing (T-146) was this case’s house until 17 October 2026: its exact certificate proves s(263)≤16.7331660078993790, the reported and the verified upper bound, 7.25×10−3 below the ceiling the case held until then, 16.7404196795387766 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing (T-116), which stays retained as history (the certificate).

The second SQUISH update

Chaoweeraprasit, using SQUISH, reported this packing on 7 October 2026: s(263)≤16.7404196795387766, with exact side 9424018478849569/562949953421312. Two independently implemented exact rational SAT routes accepted the complete packing and rejected both complete-roster controls. Two separately prompted AI reviews accepted the mathematical inputs and full receipt bindings. The author reports the seed as Couzo’s s(297), carved down to n263’s record, then nearby search and squeeze.

The revision-specific packet retains the source print 16.7404196795387747 separately from the verified upward decimal ceiling. The exact side is unchanged; this certifies feasibility and an upper bound, without optimality, rigidity or human oversight claims. Earlier source geometry, certificates, credit and verification lanes remain historical evidence for their own packings.

Earlier SQUISH update

Previously, Chaoweeraprasit, using SQUISH, reports a tighter bound s(263)≤16.7404464800428692, with exact side 1688127953620802672872096218104440928487712119/100841274193809894793232914114737381771837440. This update is confirmed at V3/C3 by the complete retained dual exact replay and separately prompted scoped AI reviews. It establishes a feasible upper bound; optimality and human oversight have not been established. The author reports the seed as Couzo’s s(297), carved down to n’s Kingbird record. The revision-specific packet retains the source print 16.7404464800428698 separately from the safe decimal ceiling. The atlas drawing below uses the update’s exact rational geometry, checked for the drawing independently of the frontier assurance. Earlier certified geometries, evidence and reviews remain retained as historical provenance, separate from this update’s confirmation.

Open. Previously, the earlier verified packing, Couzo’s at Daniel’s exact optimum (T-098), gives s(263)≤16.7422702620250576838…, and the strongest lower bound independently verified here is 16.224185 from Karakuş’s general theorem, leaving a gap of 0.5181. General bound: s(N)≥1/2+N−⌊N⌋+1/4.

The exact optimum

Daniel’s square-packing published on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing at its exact optimum (T-098): the same 263 squares in a square of side 16.7422702620250576838…, 6.7×10−12 below the side Couzo prints. Square for square, its pose lies within 4.2×10−5 of the binary64 pose the atlas previously pictured for this count. 35 squares move by more than 1×10−8, none of them listed by the source as free, each by at most 4.2×10−5; every other square moves by at most 8.7×10−9. The previous atlas witness was that binary64 pose, posed at its finder’s larger side; the side above is witnessed by the certificate itself. Daniel’s solver moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing the side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals, each square a rational centre and a rational t=tan(θ/2).

This repository decides the certificate exactly. Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept it as well (receipts). Previously, that proves s(263)≤16.7422702620250576838…, the verified upper bound; it says nothing about optimality. The source reports the exact point as a certified bound only: its numerical checks do not show it to be a local minimum of the side. On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by me.”

The packing

Couzo’s square-packing reports a packing of side 16.742270262031791 for this count, dated 3 October 2026, the revision this record retained (T-092). It replaces his packing of side 16.742280159187313, dated 27 September 2026 (T-056). Its first packing for this count, of side 16.742448478819039, is dated 24 September 2026. The repository names no method and no tolerance, and itself states no AI assistance; its author said on issue #227 that he found the 102 and 103 packings “with the help of Claude”.

This repository certifies it exactly. The retained decimal pose rounds to an exact rational packing at centre dilation 1, of side 16.7422702620317915860…, 5.860×10−16 above the printed side, and every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by the promotion’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it (receipt). That proves s(263)≤16.742270262031792, which was the verified upper bound until Daniel’s exact optimum above replaced it; it says nothing about optimality. Interval arithmetic on the printed pose itself, with each angle’s true cosine and sine and no rational rounding, decides every pair and wall again and gives the same bound (interval route).

The previous best known packing

Couzo’s earlier packing for this count, of side 16.742280159187313, dated 27 September 2026, was the best known from this record’s intake of 29 September 2026 until this one (T-056), and this repository certified s(263)≤16.742280159187314 from it (receipt).

Before that intake the best known packing was the Kingbird catalogue’s, of side 16.74264068711928.

Found by Ellsworth in 2025, via an unrecorded method.

The lower bound

The strongest lower bound independently verified in this record is Karakuş’s general bound, which applies to every nonsquare N≥8:

s(N)≥12+N−⌊N⌋+14

Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, s(N)≥min(⌈N⌉,N−2⌊N⌋+1+1), which is stronger at this n and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.

Source-reported bounds are recorded separately from this independently verified theorem.

Evan Daniel’s certificate (T-146)

Daniel’s display regularization of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, reported in his regularized record lists, on no issue, at exact side 16733166007899378970679613144039/1000000000000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 16.7331660078993790 (T-146). The certificate gives a rational side and, for each of the 263 unit squares, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle; the retained packet holds it with the complete native jobs that decided it.

Both maintained exact routes decided it here, sqpack’s exact separating-axis verifier and the independent rational corner checker, with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, and a third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided it again. No route here is the source’s code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The review of 11 October 2026 and the final review of 11 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(263)≤16.7331660078993790, the verified upper bound until 17 October 2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate regularizes for display the packing T-136 records, at the side the source reports as that packing’s exact optimum, so the packing stays with its finder and Daniel is credited with the regularization and the certificate. That the two are one packing is the source’s claim, measured here and not decided (T-146’s regularizations).

The source’s credits say the repository’s work was produced by Claude (Anthropic) under human direction.

The house it replaces, 16.7404196795387766 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing (T-116), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-136 at 16.7331660078998839, T-134 at 16.7404126538191566, T-115 at 16.7404464800428692 and T-125 at 16.7406234266167407, stay verified and are not selected. T-174 at 16.7331660078993790, 1.67×10−19 below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 14 October 2026. From 15 October 2026 until the owner’s house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold, PR #574’s houses were held for the owner, since their witnesses would add about 18.5 MB to a checkout and their custody inputs about 5.8 MB to every worker’s snapshot.

PingYou Ltd’s certificate (T-174)

PingYou Ltd’s tighter certificate of Daniel’s display regularization of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, reported in pull request #574, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as 16.73316600789937898 (T-174).

The source ran both maintained routes itself on its corners witnesses; those runs are its own, and the replay here is independently re-implemented. The review of 14 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(263)≤16.73316600789937898, the verified upper bound: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate is PingYou Ltd’s tightening of the packing T-146 records, measured here pose by pose as that packing (T-174’s regularizations), so the packing keeps its finder’s credit and PingYou Ltd is credited with the certificate.

The source makes no statement about AI assistance in this pull request; for its #503 and #504 certificates the author said on 12 October 2026 that they were AI assisted by ‘PY’, an unreleased agentic AI offering by PingYou Ltd.

The house it replaces, 16.7331660078993790 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by Daniel (T-146), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-136 at 16.7331660078998839, T-134 at 16.7404126538191566, T-116 at 16.7404196795387766, T-115 at 16.7404464800428692 and T-125 at 16.7406234266167407, stay verified and are not selected.
