Three exact feasible upper bounds at n=266,270,272 from new source arrangements

    Claim and records
    Claim
Complete rational packings establish s(266)≤16.8230287507564760, s(270)≤16.9378072284460292 and s(272)≤16.9681101457696006. All displays are upward ceilings of exact rational sides; arrangement novelty remains author-reported.
    Significance
Three strictly smaller exact feasible ceilings with complete changed poses; no solved case or optimality claim. Confirmed on 11 October: new arrangements lowering three case ceilings, by about 3.3e-5 at n=266, are case results as T-131 and T-135 are; re-solves of credited arrangements (T-117, T-137) are S2.

    Claim and records
    Claim
One complete rational source certificate reports a finite upper-bound improvement at the exact side it states: s(270)≤16.928162252196750114897964982713.

The certificate and its duplicate-square and outside-container controls were decided here on 21 October 2026 by both maintained exact routes, and the frozen comparison rebuilt; no route here is the source's code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The 21 October review found no blocking defect.

Issue 703 reports a packing found by Daniel's basin explorer in a near-record sweep over stored non-record descendants of Chaoweeraprasit's (itsnaka's) #500 packing (T-151), the register's s(270) packing, which PingYou Ltd refined in PR #574 (T-174); it asks that #500's packing be credited as the ultimate start, and calls this a new packing, a different local minimum from the register's. Measured here pose by pose, the packing is another arrangement of the design that the case's earlier house best packing (T-174) holds, not a refinement of it, found from #500's packing as the source describes.

The author reports that his two exact checkers, verify_cert.py (separating axes) and verify_cert2.py (polygon intersection), accept the certificate, and a KKT local minimum strict modulo 23 exact flat motions and not isolated, with 263 corner-corner contacts, no corner-corner MILP descent, 1 rattler and 67 tilted squares; those are numerical evidence at 80 digits, not proofs. The source's credits say the work was done with Claude (Anthropic) under Daniel's direction.
    Significance
Another arrangement of the design at 270, 3.47e-05 below the case and every report there, to a new KKT point with 15 squares moved beyond a tenth, two fewer tilted squares and no tilt angle shared; a smaller margin than #664's 271 (4.46e-05, three squares, S3) and #689's 308 (1.12e-03, S3), with as many squares beyond a tenth as the 308 (15), and well above T-188's 9.29e-06 (S2); no lower bound or optimum.

Scope

Square 0 of the retained witness (witness id 1) translates 0.015934 along (0.874304, 0.485379) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 24 of its 270 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.

Regularized drawing

Regularized by the Squares Project with Daniel's regularizer (evand/square-packing, MIT), unmodified. A drawing of T-224's packing at the witness's own side: a pure regularization, which proves no new bound, so not a result.

s(270) — open

Hosono’s closed form, 14 October 2026. Hosono’s closed form (wand125, 13 October 2026, T-180) states s(N)≥a(N) for every non-square N≥49, from a measure of line segments on 34 intervals of the fractional part. At n=270, k=16 and interval 24 give a(270)=16.489840789077164904871220125950…, so the reported lower bound here is now s(270)≥16.489840789077, rounded down, above Nagamochi’s closed form, 16.45962483374. The source replayed its certificate with its own checker; no record of it has been replayed here, so the verified lower bound is unchanged. The source states that its search, certificates, checkers and text were produced with AI assistance (Claude and Codex), under the direction of and reviewed by Hosono.

House adoption, 21 October 2026. Daniel’s arrangement, in a search started from Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, of that packing’s design, composed from SQUISH’s issue 481 n = 209 packing, whole, and the Kingbird catalogue’s former n = 19 packing (T-224) is now this case’s house: its exact certificate proves s(270)≤16.9281622521967502, the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about 3.47×10−5. The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as 16.92819699332901659 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by PingYou Ltd (T-174), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).

House adoption, 17 October 2026. PingYou Ltd’s tighter certificate of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing composed from SQUISH’s issue 481 n = 209 packing, whole, and the Kingbird catalogue’s former n = 19 packing (T-174) was this case’s house until 21 October 2026: its exact certificate proves s(270)≤16.92819699332901659, the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about 1.59×10−31. The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as 16.9281969933290166 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing (T-151), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).

House adoption, 12 October 2026. Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, composed from SQUISH’s issue 481 n = 209 packing, whole, and the Kingbird catalogue’s former n = 19 packing (T-151) was this case’s house until 17 October 2026: its exact certificate proves s(270)≤16.9281969933290166, the reported and the verified upper bound, 1.58×10−3 below the ceiling the case held until then, 16.9297753535413596 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by Couzo (T-140), which stays retained as history (the certificate).

House adoption, 11 October 2026. Couzo’s refinement of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing (T-140) was this case’s house until 12 October 2026: its exact certificate proves s(270)≤16.9297753535413596, the reported and the verified upper bound, 8.03×10−3 below the ceiling the case held until then, 16.937807228446029110709567408515 from Daniel’s packing (T-119), which stays retained as history (the certificate).

New exact construction, 7 October 2026. The complete #399 certificate proves s(270)≤16.9378072284460292 (T-119). The display is the least upward sixteen-place ceiling of the full rational side. It replaces the atlas pose; earlier source reports and certifications below describe their original, different geometries.

Open. Previously, the best known published packing, Couzo’s at Daniel’s exact optimum (T-098), gives s(270)≤16.9378103293409541103…, and the strongest lower bound independently verified here is 16.445218 from Karakuş’s general theorem, leaving a gap of 0.4926. General bound: s(N) >= 1/2 + sqrt(N - floor(sqrt(N)) + 1/4).

The earlier exact optimum

Daniel’s square-packing published on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing at its exact optimum (T-098): the same 270 squares in a square of side 16.9378103293409541103…, 5.0×10−11 below the side Couzo prints. Square for square, its pose lies within 2.5×10−7 of the binary64 pose the atlas pictures for this count. 2 squares move by more than 1×10−8, none of them listed by the source as free, each by at most 2.5×10−7; every other square moves by at most 7.1×10−11. The earlier known-best witness was that binary64 pose, posed at its finder’s larger side; the side above is witnessed by the certificate itself. Daniel’s solver moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing the side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals, each square a rational centre and a rational t=tan(θ/2).

This repository decides the certificate exactly. Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept it as well (receipts). Previously, that proves s(270)≤16.9378103293409541103…, the verified upper bound; it says nothing about optimality. The source reports the exact point as a KKT local minimum: multipliers that keep it in equilibrium, a reduced Hessian positive definite once its exact flat motions are set aside (its per-count report), and no first-order descent across corner-to-corner contacts, each computed numerically at that point; none of that is verified here, and it bears on this packing alone, not on s(270). On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by me.”

The earlier packing

Couzo’s square-packing reports a packing of side 16.937810329390629 for this count, dated 27 September 2026 and unchanged when this record retained the repository on 27 September 2026 (T-056). Its first packing for this count, of side 16.940571203936592, is dated 26 September 2026. The repository names no method and no tolerance, and itself states no AI assistance; its author said on issue #227 that he found the 102 and 103 packings “with the help of Claude”.

This repository certifies it exactly. The retained decimal pose rounds to an exact rational packing at centre dilation 1, of side 16.9378103293906285456…, no larger than the printed side, and every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by the promotion’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it (receipt). Previously, that proves s(270)≤16.937810329390629, which was the verified upper bound until Daniel’s exact optimum above replaced it; it says nothing about optimality. Interval arithmetic on the printed pose itself, with each angle’s true cosine and sine and no rational rounding, decides every pair and wall again and gives the same bound (interval route).

Casson’s square-packing, dated 23 September 2026 and made with the help of Claude as its README says, reports a packing of side 16.94057158197226087 for this count, larger than Couzo’s by 0.00276125258163187. Casson’s is the earlier of the two by the timestamps this record’s priority notes keep: Couzo’s first packing for this count, of side 16.940571203936592, is dated 26 September 2026. The record states both dates and infers nothing about whether either packing derives from the other.

The previous best known packing

Before this intake the best known packing was the Kingbird catalogue’s, of side 16.94073593015457.

Found by Ellsworth in 2026, via simulated annealing.

The lower bound

The strongest lower bound independently verified in this record is Karakuş’s general bound, which applies to every nonsquare N≥8:

s(N)≥12+N−⌊N⌋+14

Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, s(N)≥min(⌈N⌉,N−2⌊N⌋+1+1), which is stronger at this n and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.

Source-reported bounds are recorded separately from this independently verified theorem.

The three new arrangements

Daniel supplies this complete rational centre/half-angle packing at exact side 3387561445689205822141913481703/200000000000000000000000000000. Both independent project implementations accept every square, wall and pair; both reject complete-roster duplicate-square and outside-container controls. The full inputs and native results are retained in the separate packet. A separately prompted mathematical review independently reran all nine jobs. This establishes feasible upper bounds at V3/C3. Arrangement novelty, KKT, local minimality, rigidity, global optimality and human oversight are not established. The earlier #375 source namespace and T-098/T-101 certificates remain unchanged.

Francisco Couzo’s certificate (T-140)

Couzo’s refinement of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, reported on jlevy/squares#488, at exact side 2116221919192669947792003526953/125000000000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 16.9297753535413596 (T-140). The certificate gives a rational side and, for each of the 270 unit squares, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle; the retained packet holds it with the complete native jobs that decided it.

Both maintained exact routes decided it here, sqpack’s exact separating-axis verifier and the independent rational corner checker, with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, and a third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided it again. One maintained route is the verifier the source ran; the independent rational corner checker and the third route are independently re-implemented. The review of 10 October 2026 and the final review of 11 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(270)≤16.9297753535413596, the verified upper bound until 12 October 2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The author says the search code and the request were written with Claude under his direction.

The house it replaces, 16.937807228446029110709567408515 from Daniel’s packing (T-119), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-136 at 16.9297801262411717, T-134 at 16.9367200311210158, T-130 at 16.9367230228761835 and T-138 at 16.936723155038, stay verified and are not selected.

Nate Chaoweeraprasit’s certificate (T-151)

Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, composed from SQUISH’s issue 481 n = 209 packing, whole, and the Kingbird catalogue’s former n = 19 packing, reported on jlevy/squares#500, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as 16.9281969933290166 (T-151).

No route here is the source’s code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The review of 11 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(270)≤16.9281969933290166, the verified upper bound until 17 October 2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The source states that SQUISH’s solver, its verification and the issue were written with Claude Opus 5.5, and that the Mondrian composition method was formulated by the author and implemented with Claude Opus 5.5, under his direction.

The house it replaces, 16.9297753535413596 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by Couzo (T-140), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-136 at 16.9297801262411717, T-134 at 16.9367200311210158, T-130 at 16.9367230228761835, T-138 at 16.936723155038 and T-119 at 16.9378072284460292, stay verified and are not selected. T-174 at 16.9281969933290166, 1.59×10−31 below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 14 October 2026. From 15 October 2026 until the owner’s house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold, PR #574’s houses were held for the owner, since their witnesses would add about 18.5 MB to a checkout and their custody inputs about 5.8 MB to every worker’s snapshot.

PingYou Ltd’s certificate (T-174)

PingYou Ltd’s tighter certificate of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing composed from SQUISH’s issue 481 n = 209 packing, whole, and the Kingbird catalogue’s former n = 19 packing, reported in pull request #574, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as 16.92819699332901659 (T-174).

The source ran both maintained routes itself on its corners witnesses; those runs are its own, and the replay here is independently re-implemented. The review of 14 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(270)≤16.92819699332901659, the verified upper bound until 21 October 2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate is PingYou Ltd’s tightening of the packing T-151 records, measured here pose by pose as that packing (T-174’s regularizations), so the packing keeps its finder’s credit and PingYou Ltd is credited with the certificate.

The source makes no statement about AI assistance in this pull request; for its #503 and #504 certificates the author said on 12 October 2026 that they were AI assisted by ‘PY’, an unreleased agentic AI offering by PingYou Ltd.

Evan Daniel’s certificate (T-224)

Daniel’s arrangement, in a search started from Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, of that packing’s design, composed from SQUISH’s issue 481 n = 209 packing, whole, and the Kingbird catalogue’s former n = 19 packing, reported on jlevy/squares#703, at exact side 16928162252196750114897964982713/1000000000000000000000000000000, displayed upward as 16.9281622521967502 (T-224). The certificate gives a rational side and, for each of the 270 unit squares, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle; the retained packet holds it with the complete native jobs that decided it.

Both maintained exact routes decided it here, sqpack’s exact separating-axis verifier and the independent rational corner checker, with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls; the 21 October review’s own exact route, which no verifier entry names, decided it again by separating axes on every pair and exact intersection area on the near pairs, and its sharp controls at 10−30 found both maintained routes exact at the far wall and at the closest pair. No route here is the source’s code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The review of 21 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(270)≤16.9281622521967502, the verified upper bound: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The source’s credits say its work was done with Claude (Anthropic) under human direction, and the commit that publishes the certificate names Claude Opus 5.5 as co-author and says Daniel approved it.

The author’s basin explorer started from Chaoweeraprasit’s n = 270 packing of #500, the register’s packing for 270, which PingYou Ltd’s certificate (T-174) refines, and stored non-record descendants of it; a near-record sweep over them reached this packing. The issue asks that #500’s packing be credited as the ultimate start, and calls this a different local minimum from the register’s. Measured by the 21 October review, square by square, the best assignment against T-174’s packing, which is #500’s to 10−30, is the identity: it keeps 255 of the 270 squares within a tenth and moves 15 beyond it, at most 0.224, and no tilt angle is shared. So it is another arrangement of the design that packing holds, not a refinement in this record’s sense, found from #500’s packing by the source’s account (T-224).
