Three exact feasible upper bounds at n=266,270,272 from new source arrangements

    Claim and records
    Claim
Complete rational packings establish s(266)≤16.8230287507564760, s(270)≤16.9378072284460292 and s(272)≤16.9681101457696006. All displays are upward ceilings of exact rational sides; arrangement novelty remains author-reported.
    Significance
Three strictly smaller exact feasible ceilings with complete changed poses; no solved case or optimality claim. Confirmed on 11 October: new arrangements lowering three case ceilings, by about 3.3e-5 at n=266, are case results as T-131 and T-135 are; re-solves of credited arrangements (T-117, T-137) are S2.

An exact contact refinement of SQUISH's packing of 272 squares

    Claim and records
    Claim
One complete rational source certificate reports a finite upper-bound improvement at the exact side it states: s(272)≤1696558647483767063575600703342204556962987576825904423514291493830293022275118026464939778830359993334240647227/100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.

All three retained jobs, the positive with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, were decided again here on 14 October 2026 by both maintained exact routes and equal their retained rows. A third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided the certificate with six controls each and held the derived fact to the pinned file it is derived from, fetched at the pin. No route here is the source's code; the source's runs of this repository's two maintained routes on its corners witnesses are its own and decide nothing here, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The 14 October review found no blocking defect.

The author reports that exact separating-axis and rational polygon-intersection implementations accept all 272 squares, 1,088 wall conditions and 36,856 pairs, for the new witness, the prior certificate and a pre-stationarity projection, with duplicate and outside controls refused and the conversion to its corners Witness/v2 lossless; and that this repository's sqpack exact_verify and check_rational_witness_independent, run unchanged, accept that witness. Those statements are the author's; no source program ran here.

Credit PingYou Ltd (https://github.com/BuddenPing/square-packing-certificates) with this contact refinement, as the source asks, of Chaoweeraprasit's SQUISH n272 (T-151, issue 500), whose components the source names as SQUISH's s(240) and the former Kingbird s(182) catalogue construction, with Daniel's exact contact solver. The issue states: 'Computation, checking and submission preparation were AI-assisted; the requested attribution is as stated above.' The pinned source makes no statement about AI assistance.

Measured pose by pose by that review, it is Chaoweeraprasit's SQUISH packing (T-151) re-solved, no square moved beyond 2e-07. At 272 PR 574's certificate (T-174) is smaller, by 1.70e-99, and the house rule of 16 October 2026, which lifted the hold of 15 October, made T-174 the house there, and the adoption of 17 October 2026 (think-3mry) moved the case to it. This entry held the case until then, the smallest certificate there that the hold left in.
    Significance
A re-solve 5.26e-16 below the case ceiling, as T-155; no lower bound or optimum.

Rigidity

not rigid, numerically checked, numerical multiprecision

Evidence: E-translation-escape-not-rigid

Scope

Square 2 of the retained witness (witness id 3) translates 0.049588 along (1, 0) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 30 of its 272 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.

Regularized drawing

Regularized by the Squares Project with its own axis tool (regularize_axis_components/2). A drawing of T-174's packing at the witness's own side: a pure regularization, which proves no new bound, so not a result. The house is itself its source's regularization of T-151's packing (PingYou Ltd after Friedman, Ellsworth, Daniel, Xu, Barnett, Couzo, Ostashev, Chaoweeraprasit, Gupta, Fang, Polkovskyi, Levy), registered as T-174 for the upper bound its exact side proves.

Open questions
  • Priority: The catalogue pictures the packing this entry was converted into, not the one it started as; the original lineage is the page’s own “Originally found by Lars Cleemann between 1991 and 1998”. (Lars Cleemann)
  • Priority: s(272) <= 16.96944950195848989, Casson's packing, larger than the reported side (Casson)
  • Priority: s(272) <= 16.969484711401012, the first of Couzo's packings for this count (Couzo)
  • Priority: Earlier reported ceiling 16.968165867852158332894136646166 from [evand exact optima 2026-10-05]; its finder, polynomial, poses, certificates and rigidity screen remain historical, separately preserved in the #399 prior-state archive. (Couzo)
  • Priority: Earlier house 16.968110145769600505005359235592 from [Daniel new arrangements 2026-10-07], the case’s ceiling until 12 October 2026; its certificate and replay remain retained. (Daniel)
  • Priority: Earlier house 16.9655864748376712 from [SQUISH fourth request 2026-10-11], the case’s ceiling from 12 October 2026 until 15 October 2026; its certificate and replay remain retained. (Chaoweeraprasit (itsnaka))
  • Priority: Earlier house 16.9655864748376707 from [PingYou n272 refinement 2026-10-12], the case’s ceiling from 15 October 2026 until 17 October 2026; its certificate and replay remain retained. (Chaoweeraprasit (itsnaka), PingYou Ltd)

s(272) — open

Hosono’s closed form, 14 October 2026. Hosono’s closed form (wand125, 13 October 2026, T-180) states s(N)≥a(N) for every non-square N≥49, from a measure of line segments on 34 intervals of the fractional part. At n=272, k=16 and interval 27 give a(272)=16.565085529013318748350114228388…, so the reported lower bound here is now s(272)≥16.565085529013, rounded down, above Nagamochi’s closed form, 16.52417469626. The source replayed its certificate with its own checker; no record of it has been replayed here, so the verified lower bound is unchanged. The source states that its search, certificates, checkers and text were produced with AI assistance (Claude and Codex), under the direction of and reviewed by Hosono.

House adoption, 17 October 2026. PingYou Ltd’s exact re-solve of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing (T-174) is now this case’s house: its exact certificate proves s(272)≤16.96558647483767064, the reported and the verified upper bound, rounded outward from its exact side. The exact certificate side improves the previous verified exact side by about 1.70×10−99. The earlier ceiling, displayed outward as 16.9655864748376707 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing, improved by PingYou Ltd (T-171), applied until this adoption and stays retained as history (the certificate).

House adoption, 15 October 2026. PingYou Ltd’s exact re-solve of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing (T-171) was this case’s house until 17 October 2026: its exact certificate proves s(272)≤16.9655864748376707, the reported and the verified upper bound, 5.26×10−16 below the ceiling the case held until then, 16.9655864748376712 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing (T-151), which stays retained as history (the certificate).

House adoption, 12 October 2026. Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, composed from SQUISH’s own n = 240 packing and the Kingbird catalogue’s former n = 182 packing (T-151) was this case’s house until 15 October 2026: its exact certificate proves s(272)≤16.9655864748376712, the reported and the verified upper bound, 2.52×10−3 below the ceiling the case held until then, 16.968110145769600505005359235592 from Daniel’s packing (T-119), which stays retained as history (the certificate).

New exact construction, 7 October 2026. The complete #399 certificate proves s(272)≤16.9681101457696006 (T-119). The display is the least upward sixteen-place ceiling of the full rational side. It replaces the atlas pose; earlier source reports and certifications below describe their original, different geometries.

Open. Previously, the best known published packing, Couzo’s at Daniel’s exact optimum (T-098), gives s(272)≤16.9681658678521583329…, and the strongest lower bound independently verified here is 16.507810 from Karakuş’s general theorem, leaving a gap of 0.4604. General bound: s(N) >= 1/2 + sqrt(N - floor(sqrt(N)) + 1/4).

The earlier exact optimum

Daniel’s square-packing published on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing at its exact optimum (T-098): the same 272 squares in a square of side 16.9681658678521583329…, 1.2×10−11 below the side Couzo prints. Square for square, its pose lies within 1.8×10−4 of the binary64 pose the atlas pictures for this count. 6 squares move by more than 1×10−8, all of them squares the source lists as carrying no force; every other square moves by at most 1.8×10−11. The earlier known-best witness was that binary64 pose, posed at its finder’s larger side; the side above is witnessed by the certificate itself. Daniel’s solver moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing the side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals, each square a rational centre and a rational t=tan(θ/2).

This repository decides the certificate exactly. Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept it as well (receipts). Previously, that proves s(272)≤16.9681658678521583329…, the verified upper bound; it says nothing about optimality. The source reports the exact point as a certified bound only: its numerical checks do not show it to be a local minimum of the side. On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by me.”

The earlier packing

Couzo’s square-packing reports a packing of side 16.968165867864400 for this count, dated 3 October 2026, the revision this record retained (T-092). It replaces his packing of side 16.968279785326896, dated 27 September 2026 (T-056). Its first packing for this count, of side 16.969484711401012, is dated 24 September 2026. The repository names no method and no tolerance, and itself states no AI assistance; its author said on issue #227 that he found the 102 and 103 packings “with the help of Claude”.

This repository certifies it exactly. The retained decimal pose rounds to an exact rational packing at centre dilation 1, of side 16.9681658678643997857…, no larger than the printed side, and every pair and every wall is decided over ℚ twice, by the promotion’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it (receipt). Previously, that proves s(272)≤16.968165867864400, which was the verified upper bound until Daniel’s exact optimum above replaced it; it says nothing about optimality. Interval arithmetic on the printed pose itself, with each angle’s true cosine and sine and no rational rounding, decides every pair and wall again and gives the same bound (interval route).

Casson’s square-packing, dated 23 September 2026 and made with the help of Claude as its README says, reports a packing of side 16.96944950195848989 for this count, larger than Couzo’s by 0.00128363409408989. Casson’s is the earlier of the two by the timestamps this record’s priority notes keep: Couzo’s first packing for this count, of side 16.969484711401012, is dated 24 September 2026. Previously, the record states both dates and infers nothing about whether either packing derives from the other.

The previous best known packing

Couzo’s earlier packing for this count, of side 16.968279785326896, dated 27 September 2026, was the best known from this record’s intake of 29 September 2026 until this one (T-056), and this repository certified s(272)≤16.968279785326897 from it (receipt).

Before that intake the best known packing was the Kingbird catalogue’s, of side 16.96980702828259.

Found by an unrecorded author. Improved by Ellsworth in January 2026, via simulated annealing.

The lower bound

The strongest lower bound independently verified in this record is Karakuş’s general bound, which applies to every nonsquare N≥8:

s(N)≥12+N−⌊N⌋+14

Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, s(N)≥min(⌈N⌉,N−2⌊N⌋+1+1), which is stronger at this n and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.

Source-reported bounds are recorded separately from this independently verified theorem.

The three new arrangements

Daniel supplies this complete rational centre/half-angle packing at exact side 2121013768221200063125669904449/125000000000000000000000000000. Both independent project implementations accept every square, wall and pair; both reject complete-roster duplicate-square and outside-container controls. The full inputs and native results are retained in the separate packet. A separately prompted mathematical review independently reran all nine jobs. This establishes feasible upper bounds at V3/C3. Arrangement novelty, KKT, local minimality, rigidity, global optimality and human oversight are not established. The earlier #375 source namespace and T-098/T-101 certificates remain unchanged.

Nate Chaoweeraprasit’s certificate (T-151)

Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, composed from SQUISH’s own n = 240 packing and the Kingbird catalogue’s former n = 182 packing, reported on jlevy/squares#500, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as 16.9655864748376712 (T-151). The certificate gives a rational side and, for each of the 272 unit squares, a rational centre and the tangent of its half-angle; the retained packet holds it with the complete native jobs that decided it.

Both maintained exact routes decided it here, sqpack’s exact separating-axis verifier and the independent rational corner checker, with its duplicate-square and outside-container controls, and a third exact route, half-extent containment and exact intersection area, decided it again. No route here is the source’s code, so the replay is independently re-implemented. The review of 11 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(272)≤16.9655864748376712, the verified upper bound until 15 October 2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The source states that SQUISH’s solver, its verification and the issue were written with Claude Opus 5.5, and that the Mondrian composition method was formulated by the author and implemented with Claude Opus 5.5, under his direction.

The house it replaces, 16.968110145769600505005359235592 from Daniel’s packing (T-119), stays retained with its own replay as history.

PingYou Ltd’s certificate (T-171)

PingYou Ltd’s exact re-solve of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, reported on jlevy/squares#569, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as 16.9655864748376707 (T-171).

The source ran both maintained routes itself on its corners witnesses; those runs are its own, and the replay here is independently re-implemented. The review of 14 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(272)≤16.9655864748376707, the verified upper bound until 17 October 2026: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate is PingYou Ltd’s tightening of the packing T-151 records, measured here pose by pose as that packing (T-171’s regularizations), so the packing keeps its finder’s credit and PingYou Ltd is credited with the certificate.

The issue states that computation, checking and submission preparation were AI-assisted; the pinned source makes no statement about AI assistance.

The house it replaces, 16.9655864748376712 from Chaoweeraprasit’s packing (T-151), stays retained with its own replay as history. The other certificates confirmed here at this count, T-119 at 16.9681101457696006, stay verified and are not selected. T-174 at 16.9655864748376707, 1.70×10−99 below this house, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 14 October 2026. From 15 October 2026 until the owner’s house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold, PR #574’s houses were held for the owner, since their witnesses would add about 18.5 MB to a checkout and their custody inputs about 5.8 MB to every worker’s snapshot.

PingYou Ltd’s certificate (T-174)

PingYou Ltd’s exact re-solve of Chaoweeraprasit’s SQUISH packing, reported in pull request #574, at an exact rational side, displayed upward as 16.96558647483767064 (T-174).

The source ran both maintained routes itself on its corners witnesses; those runs are its own, and the replay here is independently re-implemented. The review of 14 October 2026 accepted the replay for finite feasibility. That proves s(272)≤16.96558647483767064, the verified upper bound: confirmed, independently re-implemented. It says nothing about optimality, rigidity or a local minimum.

The certificate is PingYou Ltd’s tightening of the packing T-151 records, measured here pose by pose as that packing (T-174’s regularizations), so the packing keeps its finder’s credit and PingYou Ltd is credited with the certificate.
