Claim and records
- Claim
- Two rectangle densities of wand125/square-packing-bounds, checked at coverage one and published on 2 October 2026, prove = 9.4 and = 9.42. The certificate's mass is below 86 and 87 too, so it gives and as well: four counts in all.
Each certificate is a density of uniform rectangles with no point mass, of total mass n - 1/100000, at core side 9977/10000 on 201 net half-angles of step 83/40000: 661 rectangles at and 587 at . Each is accepted at every oblique net angle by code/mixed_rotated_verify.cpp, the research copy of Tokoharu's verify.cpp that the source's certificate (T-048) and the five certificates of T-069 use, which accepts coverage at least 1 where Tokoharu's requires 10001/10000, and at angle zero by exact integer tables. The least oblique lower bounds are 1.00000000089 at and 1.0000000017 at .
Both values exceed Green's reported 2 sqrt(2) + (247 + 12 sqrt(2))/41 = 9.2667335..., which this record holds at both counts by monotonicity from , by more than 0.1332 and 0.1532; the source's own improvement figures are measured from 9.2667, below Green's value, and are not lower bounds. At and 87 the value is also above the rectangle certificates T-068 reports there, 1873/200 and 941/100.
Each certificate passed a complete replay here on 2 October 2026 of the source's unchanged checker and per-angle functions on its pinned tarball: all 201 directions, each returning the certificate's own record. The replays run the source's own algorithm and are not an independent decision of coverage.
Hosono after Tokoharu and Levy, square-packing-bounds. Registration was requested in a comment of 2 October 2026 on jlevy/squares#282. The source says parts of the work were produced with AI assistance under human direction. - Significance
- Raised the verified lower bound at four counts, to 87, past Green's reported value at and 85 by the widest margins over it on record, by the certificate kind of T-048 and T-069. Further sizes from one generator at S3; the 2 October review of these certificates proposed S3, which the replays leave standing.

- and , by two packings by Chang, the first optimized by Ellsworth, certified here exactly. The Kingbird catalogue prints their sides as 9.63475764863108, of degree 672, and 9.83881526994826, cut short from 9.838815269948262260..., the root near it of the degree-41 polynomial it prints; it leaves the degree-672 polynomial to the picture's source, whose side a third party's parse reads as 9.634757648631082029.... None of those is certified here.
In the catalogue's words, was "Improved by Chang in September 2026, with GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-6 Astra", "Optimized by Ellsworth in September 2026", and its "Polynomial root solution found by Chang in September 2026", improving the Hajba and Cantrell packing by about 6.8e-5; was "Improved and optimized by Chang in September 2026, working with GPT-6 Astra, with help from 'TheMagicAnimals'", improving Ellsworth's packing of February 2026 by about 2.2e-6.
The catalogue states no checker, and its pictures, which hold the poses, could not be fetched. Each certificate is a third party's binary64 parse of the picture, rounded to rationals and dilated about its centre by 1 + 1e-13: exact rational packings of sides 9.6347576486319454... and 9.8388152699491448..., 8.65e-13 and 8.85e-13 above the printed sides, each decided pair by pair and wall by wall over Q by two checkers of this repository that share no geometry or verification code. Each bound above is that side rounded up at the printed precision.

Scope
Square 12 of the retained witness (witness id 13) translates 0.087183 along (0.707107, -0.707107) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 17 of its 87 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.
Regularized by the Squares Project with Daniel's regularizer (evand/square-packing, MIT), unmodified. A drawing of T-155's packing at the verified upper bound. Its exact side is registered in T-155, and the same side was first certified by Daniel's certificate (T-101), so it proves no new bound; the drawing itself is no further result.

Exact regularized certificate, 2026-10-12. This project’s regularization pass, Daniel’s exact solver and regularizer run here on this register’s witness, produced an exact rational packing of this arrangement, decided here over by two exact checkers: it proves , a bound Daniel’s exact certificate of this packing already proves at the same side (T-101). The verified upper bound is now that side exactly, resting on both certificates (T-101, T-155), and the record still prints it as . Until then the verified upper bound was exactly , the side of Daniel’s exact certificate of this packing rounded up at the printed precision (T-101).
Exact certificate, 2026-10-06. Daniel’s
square-packing published
on 5 October 2026 an exact rational certificate of this packing, decided here over
by two exact checkers that share no code with each other or with the
source, and by the source’s own two run here: it proves ,
the verified upper bound from 6 to 12 October 2026 (T-101). Until then the verified
upper bound was , the rounded-up side of an exact certificate of a
binary64 parse of the catalogue’s picture (T-089).
Exact certificate, 2026-10-05. Chang’s packing was certified here the same day, from a third party’s binary64 parse of the catalogue’s picture: an exact rational packing decided over by two checkers that share no geometry or verification code proves , the verified upper bound until 6 October 2026, above the printed side (T-089). Until then the verified upper bound was the grid.
Catalogue intake, 2026-10-05. The Kingbird catalogue’s capture of 30 September 2026 prints the side at for Chang’s improvement and optimization of Ellsworth’s packing of February 2026, below the side this case reported by about (T-089). It is the reported upper bound here from this date.
External intake, 2026-10-05. Hosono’s
mixed-certificate source
reports (T-091), from a density of 594 rectangles of total
mass , accepted there at every net angle by its research copy of
Tokoharu’s checker at threshold one.
It is above the this case reported, by . It supersedes the source’s
mixed_n87_L955. sqverify-fast, this repository’s clean-room verifier, decided it here
on 5 October 2026 at all 201 net directions, so it is also the verified lower bound:
confirmed, independently re-implemented.

External intake, 2026-10-03. Hosono’s
mixed-certificate source
reports the mixed certificate mixed_n87_L955 at side (T-082), since
superseded (T-091), from a density of 509 rectangles of total mass
, accepted there at every net angle by its research copy of
Tokoharu’s checker at threshold one.
It is above the this case reported, by , and supersedes the source’s
mixed_n87_L948. sqverify-fast, this repository’s clean-room verifier, decided it here
on 6 October 2026 at all 201 net directions: confirmed, independently re-implemented.
The verified lower bound is unchanged, the certificate above being higher.
Hosono’s README says parts of the work were produced with AI assistance under human

External intake, 2026-10-02 (afternoon). Hosono’s mixed-certificate source reports (T-075), since superseded (T-091), from a density of 299 rectangles of total mass , accepted there at every net angle by its research copy of Tokoharu’s checker at threshold one. It is above this count’s own rectangle certificate of the 2026-10-01 intake below and above the carried from , and its mass, below 88, carries it to as well. Its complete replay here on 3 October 2026 returned the certificate’s own record at all 201 directions, so it was also the verified lower bound until 5 October. Hosono’s README says parts of the work were produced with AI assistance under human direction.
Verified from , 2026-10-02. Hosono’s (T-071) is above this count’s own certificate, and a packing of 87 squares contains one of 85, so it bounds this case as well. Its complete replay passed here on 2 October, so it carried here as the verified lower bound until the afternoon intake above. Until the afternoon intake above, the reported field kept this count’s own certificate, which is lower.
External intake, 2026-10-01. Hosono’s rectangle-density source reports a direct certificate for this case, whose reported bound the 2026-10-02 afternoon intake above raises, with total mass , accepted by Tokoharu’s unchanged interval checker. This repository’s exact audit checks that the regenerated checker input is the published one, and checks the mass and net premises; the complete coverage replay has not yet run here, so the verified lower bound is unchanged. Hosono’s README says parts of the work were produced with AI assistance under human direction.
Open. The best known packing gives , and the verified lower bound is , from Hosono’s mixed rectangle-density certificate of 4 October, leaving a gap of .
The regularized exact certificate
This project’s regularization pass of 11 and 12 October 2026 ran Daniel’s exact
solver and regularizer
(evand/square-packing, MIT, vendored here)
on this register’s witness for this count, with the conservative angle policy and
coincide placement, which wrote its certificate at the side the solver reached, the
solved point scaled by and the side rounded up.
The result is an exact rational packing of the same 87 squares in a square of side
, below the verified upper bound the record
held before, which was that same side rounded up at the printed precision: it is the
side of Daniel’s certificate of this packing (T-101). Measured against the witness
under the box’s eight symmetries, its squares pair one to one with the witness’s; 6 move
by more than , the largest by , and none turns by more than as a
sine.
It redraws the packing visibly, and is drawn only once the regularized layer admits
it under the regularization policy.
Each pair and each wall is decided over twice, by sqpack’s exact
separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no code with it, and both
accept it; both refuse it with its tightest pair pushed into overlap and with its box
shrunk past its least clearance (certificate).
The same two checkers accepted it in the run that made it, so this is a reproduction
with the producer’s code.
That proves . Daniel’s certificate of
this packing already proves the same bound at the same side (T-101), and its replay
here, by two checkers that share no code with each other or with the source, is
independent of the code that made this view.
That side is the exact form of the case’s verified_upper_bound, which cites both
certificates (T-101, T-155) and prints it as , the decimal it printed
before and an upper display of it.
It says nothing about optimality, and the packing stays its finders’.
The earlier exact certificate
Daniel’s
square-packing published
on 5 October 2026 exact rational certificates of the packings this register lists as
best known, solved from its own witnesses, and offered those that do not lower a printed
side as a replay of the existing bounds, asking for nothing to be registered from them.
The certificate for this count holds the same 87 squares, each a rational centre and a
rational , in a square of side ,
above the side the Kingbird catalogue prints, . Square for
square, its pose lies within of the binary64 pose the atlas pictures for this
count. 15 squares move by more than , all of them squares the source lists as
carrying no force; every other square moves by at most . Daniel’s solver
moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem of minimizing the
side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward to rationals.
This repository decides the certificate exactly.
Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over
twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that
shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept
it as well
(receipts).
That proves , the verified upper bound until 12 October
2026: the certificate’s side rounded up at the fourteen decimals the catalogue prints,
as the record writes any certificate of a printed side.
It says nothing about optimality.
On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were
written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by
me.”
Its rounded-up side and the printed side agree to one unit of the printed side’s last place, the precision at which the record compares them. The printed side itself is not certified here: the certificate’s side lies above it.
The packing
Chang’s packing, as the Kingbird catalogue’s capture of 30 September 2026 prints it (T-089). In the catalogue’s words: “Improved and optimized by Chang in September 2026, working with GPT-6 Astra, with help from “TheMagicAnimals”.” It names no method for that step. Its side is the root near of the degree-41 polynomial the catalogue prints, , which the catalogue prints cut short.
The catalogue names no checker, and its SVG, which holds the pose, could not be fetched when this was recorded. The retained witness is therefore Daniel’s binary64 parse of that SVG, whose side is the polynomial’s root to 30 digits. The SVG was fetched later on 5 October and read again by this repository’s own adapter: every coordinate of the parse is the picture’s rounded to binary64, so the certificate below is of the pictured packing.
This repository certifies it exactly from that parse. The retained pose rounds to an exact rational packing of side , above the printed side, once dilated about its centre by (the promotion’s step before it, , left thirteen pairs overlapping), and every pair and every wall is decided over twice, by the promotion’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that shares no geometry or verification code with it (receipt). That proves , which was the verified upper bound until Daniel’s exact certificate replaced it; it says nothing about optimality. The printed side is not certified: Daniel’s exact certificate of the same packing (T-101) lies above it as well.
Found by Ellsworth in 2024. Improved by Cantrell in January 2025. Improved by Ellsworth in February 2026, via simulated annealing, and optimized by him the same month. Its side length is algebraic of degree 41 over .
The previous best known packing
Before this intake the best known packing was Ellsworth’s of February 2026, of side , algebraic of degree 44, as the catalogue’s capture of 22 August 2026 printed it.
The lower bound
The verified field rests on a complete decision here
(E-n087-wand125-mixed-958-sqverify-fast-replay, V3/C3) of Hosono’s
mixed certificate of 4 October by sqverify-fast, this repository’s clean-room measure
verifier: all 201 net directions of the retained candidate on 5 October 2026, with two
mutants scaled below coverage one refused.
It shares no code with the source’s checker, so it decides coverage a second way with
the same method; the source’s own checker was not run here.
Until 5 October 2026 the verified field rested on a complete replay here
(E-n087-wand125-mixed-948-source-replay, V3/C3) of Hosono’s mixed
certificate: the source’s unchanged checker and per-angle functions on the pinned
bundle, all 201 directions on 3 October 2026, each returning the certificate’s own
record. It runs the source’s own algorithm, so it confirms the source’s run rather than
deciding coverage a second way.
From the morning of 2 October 2026 until this replay the verified lower bound was
, carried from the replayed certificate
(E-n085-wand125-mixed-942-source-replay).
Until 2 October 2026 the verified lower bound was Nagamochi’s general closed form, now a reported bound (see the correction below). Karakuş’s general bound, independently verified here and below this certificate at this , applies to every nonsquare :
Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, , which is stronger at this and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.
See the Frontier corpus summary for the current aggregate count; source-reported bounds are recorded separately.
