Mixed rectangle-measure lower bound reported, on the 201-direction net
Claim and records
- Claim
- A rectangle measure of wand125/square-packing, published on 16 October 2026 and reported in jlevy/squares#446, is reported to prove = 9.6325.
The certificate, mixed_n88_L96325, is a density of 754 uniform rectangles in D4 orbits, and no point mass, of total mass 8799999/100000, on the net its candidate declares, the standard net of 201 half-angle tangents of step 83/40000 at core side 9977/10000. Since 9977/10000 (1 + 83/40000) = 399908091/400000000 < 1, and the last tangent 83/200 is past tan(pi/8), every unit square contains a concentric core at a net angle strictly in its interior.
The source reports every such core capturing mass at least one at all 201 directions, by sqverify-proof-net, its copy of this repository's sqverify_fast changed to read the declared net, in two complete runs, and a control with every mass scaled by 197/200 refused at 32 sampled directions.
The value is above T-091's 481/50 = 9.62, the verified and reported lower bound at , by 1/80.
Here the maintained readers accepted its exact mass, declared-net and check2 premises from the retained release asset. No complete replay has run here, so the value stands as reported.
wand125 after Tokoharu and Levy, square-packing. The source says parts of the work were produced with AI assistance under human direction. - Significance
- Scored as a claim: if a complete replay passes, it is the strongest lower bound on record at , 1/80 above the reported lane, by the certificate kind and standard net of T-082, T-090 and T-091, with no new technique, at S3 as T-176 to T-178 are.

not rigid, numerically checked, numerical multiprecision
Evidence: E-translation-escape-not-rigid
Scope
Square 1 of the retained witness (witness id 2) translates 0.007097 along (0, 1) with the packing still valid, so the configuration admits a non-trivial feasible motion; 43 of its 88 squares do. Every constraint is exactly affine in the slide parameter, so the arithmetic carries no linearization error, but the coordinates are the witness's own finite-precision transcription: this settles the retained configuration, not the true optimum. Rigidity and optimality are independent, and this bears only on the former.
Regularized by the Squares Project with Daniel's regularizer (evand/square-packing, MIT), with the project's modifications: same-side exact re-solve (devtools.regularize_same_side). A drawing of T-127's packing at the witness's own side: a pure regularization, which proves no new bound, so not a result.
- Priority: Prior reported s(88) <= 9.88815305375857 from [Kingbird]; its geometry, evidence and finder credit remain in the earlier packet and case history. (Ellsworth)
- Priority: Earlier conjectured optimum s(88) = 9.88815305375857 is refuted by the confirmed feasible upper bound 9.8824510304821347; the earlier packing, source credit and certificate remain historical evidence. No new optimum is conjectured or established. (Ellsworth)
- Priority: Earlier source ceiling 9.8824510304821347 from [SQUISH second update 2026-10-07]; the complete original frontier and house remain retained in the packet. (Chaoweeraprasit)

Held for the owner, 15 October 2026; lifted 16 October 2026. T-174 at , below this case’s verified ceiling, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 14 October 2026. From 15 October 2026 until the owner’s house rule of 16 October 2026 lifted the hold, PR #574’s houses were held for the owner, since their witnesses would add about 18.5 MB to a checkout and their custody inputs about 5.8 MB to every worker’s snapshot. The case keeps its house until T-193’s adoption, staged under think-ot5c, moves it to T-193’s side, below T-174’s, once the writer takes an algebraic side. T-193’s exact algebraic side at this count, a root of a degree-7 integer polynomial below this case’s verified ceiling, is confirmed here and accepted by the review of 16 October 2026.
The second SQUISH update
Previously, Chaoweeraprasit, using SQUISH, reports this packing: , with exact side . Two independently implemented exact rational SAT routes accepted the complete packing and rejected both complete-roster controls. Two separately prompted AI reviews accepted the mathematical inputs and full receipt bindings. The author reports the seed as Kingbird’s s(41), grafted into n88’s record.
The revision-specific packet retains the source print separately from the verified upward decimal ceiling. The exact side is unchanged; this certifies feasibility and an upper bound, without optimality, rigidity or human oversight claims. Earlier source geometry, certificates, credit and verification lanes remain historical evidence for their own packings.

Reported from , 2026-10-02 (afternoon). Hosono’s mixed-certificate source reports (T-075), from a density of total mass . It is above this count’s own certificates, and a packing of 88 squares contains one of 87, so it gave by monotonicity, the reported lower bound until the intakes above. Its complete replay here on 3 October 2026 returned the certificate’s own record at all 201 directions, so it was also the verified lower bound here until 5 October. Hosono’s README says parts of the work were produced with AI assistance under human direction.
External intake, 2026-10-01. Hosono’s rectangle-density source reports a direct certificate for this case, whose bound the 2026-10-02 afternoon intake above raises, with total mass , accepted by Tokoharu’s unchanged interval checker. The complete 201-direction coverage replay here accepted it again, after this repository’s exact audit checked that the regenerated checker input is the published one and checked the mass and net premises, so it was also the verified lower bound until the 2026-10-02 afternoon intake above. Hosono’s README says parts of the work were produced with AI assistance under human direction.

The exact certificate
Daniel’s
square-packing published
on 5 October 2026 exact rational certificates of the packings this register then listed
as best known, solved from its own witnesses, and offered those that do not lower a
printed side as a replay of the existing bounds, asking for nothing to be registered
from them. The certificate for this count holds the same 88 squares, each a rational
centre and a rational , in a square of side
, above the side the Kingbird catalogue prints,
. Square for square, its pose lies within of the binary64
pose the atlas pictured at that intake for this count.
Daniel’s solver moves the binary64 pose to a nearby exact KKT point of the problem
of minimizing the side under non-overlap, computed at 80 digits, and rounds it outward
to rationals.
This repository decides the certificate exactly.
Converted without rounding, every pair and every wall is decided over
twice, by sqpack’s exact separating-axis test and by an independent checker that
shares no code with it, and the source’s own two checkers, run here as retained, accept
it as well
(receipts).
That previously proved , the verified upper bound: the
certificate’s side rounded up at the fourteen decimals the catalogue prints, as the
record writes any certificate of a printed side.
It says nothing about optimality.
On jlevy/squares#375 its author wrote that the solver, its checkers and the batch “were
written with Claude (Anthropic) as a coding and research agent, directed and reviewed by
me.”
The verified upper bound and the printed side at that intake agreed to one unit of the printed side’s last place, the precision at which the record compares them. The printed side itself was not certified by that rational certificate: the certificate’s side lay above it.
The packing
Found by Ellsworth in 2024, via a hand construction. Its side length is algebraic of degree 20 over . As at , the rational polynomial is not the sharpest form available: over the archived catalogue records a degree-10 factor, whose real root was checked here against the recorded value.
The lower bound
The verified field rests on a complete decision here
(E-n088-wand125-mixed-962-sqverify-fast-replay, V3/C3) of Hosono’s
mixed certificate of 4 October by sqverify-fast, this repository’s clean-room measure
verifier: all 201 net directions of the retained candidate on 5 October 2026, with two
mutants scaled below coverage one refused.
It shares no code with the source’s checker, so it decides coverage a second way with
the same method; the source’s own checker was not run here.
Until 5 October 2026 the verified field rested on the complete replay here of Hosono’s
mixed certificate for 87 squares
(E-n087-wand125-mixed-948-source-replay, V3/C3): all 201 directions
on 3 October 2026, each returning the certificate’s own record.
Its mass, , is below 88, so a packing of 88 at a side below
would capture at least 88 from it.
From 2 October 2026 until that replay the verified lower bound was , by the
replayed rectangle certificate of 1 October
(E-wand125-rectangle-2026-10-01-source-replay).
Nagamochi’s general closed form, the verified lower bound before both certificates, is now a reported bound (see the correction below). Karakuş’s general bound, independently verified here and below both certificates at this , applies to every nonsquare :
Correction, 2 October 2026. Until that date the verified lower bound here was Nagamochi’s general closed form, , which is stronger at this and is now recorded as a reported bound. Its published proof rests on Nagamochi’s Lemma 1, which Karakuş showed false; nothing is disproved, and no packing beating it is known (review of 2 October 2026). This register had recorded that proof as verified, its own error, logged as defect D-516.
See the Frontier corpus summary for the current aggregate count; source-reported bounds are recorded separately.

The Gupta precision refinement
Gupta refines the earlier SQUISH construction at exact rational side , displayed upward as (T-127). The complete factual packet retains every original certificate, complete comparator and actual deciding outcome for all seventeen source cases, including three withdrawals.
Complete dual-route native replay, full-roster controls and separately prompted source and production review confirm finite feasibility at V3/C3 using independently re-implemented deciding code. The repository routes share parsing, half-angle conversion, Fraction arithmetic and SAT methodology; the recorded code relation is to the source producer’s verification, not to each other. The full source poses are converted without dilation or rounding. The source credits Chaoweeraprasit for SQUISH and Daniel for the optimizer. No author program is executed here. Feasibility establishes no optimizer, local-minimum, rigidity, novelty, priority, global-optimality, formal proof or human-oversight assurance.
